They also tested out different scenarios, where, for example, two officers responded to a report of a man with a gun on the platform and called for backup.

Outside the station, police officers with black helmets and heavy-duty vests could be seen with K-9 units.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton, FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro and Homeland Security Director Jeh Johnson were on hand to watch.

De Blasio said the drill showed that the city is 'fundamentally prepared.' He added: 'You see more coordination, more teamwork than ever before.'

Bratton said exercises like the subway drill 'are vitally necessary' and provide lessons for emergency responders.

'Today's exercise was designed to test the coordination between our resources as well as the Fire Department,' Bratton said.

'In New York City, we are, at this time, very well prepared and continually improving that preparedness.'

The Department of Homeland Security provided funding for the exercise in Manhattan because of concern that a lone wolf could attack in the U.S.

The drill comes after emergency responders in France were tested to their limits as eight terrorists carried out the devastating attacks in different ares in the city of light on November 13.

French doctor, Philippe Juvin, the head of the emergency department at Georges Pompidou Hospital said that he received about 50 of the 352 people wounded.

He described the injuries as being 'worse than war' and described how doctors worked through the night to save patients.

He praised the fact that French doctors had been trained beforehand to handle patients during a catastrophic event like the terror attacks.

America remains on high alert after ISIS issued a chilling new video warning that countries taking part in air strikes against Syria would suffer the same fate as Paris.

The terror group also claimed that they will attack Washington D.C. and possibly New York next in videos released on social media sites.

Homeland Security Director Jeh Johnson said: 'We know of no specific credible threat of a Paris-like attack directed at the U.S. homeland.

'We are and we continue to be and we have been concerned about copycat-like attacks.'

Johnson urged Americans to travel and attend public events this holiday to send a clear message to the terrorists that they cannot win.
