Kate Winslet continues war against social media saying teens should be outside 'climbing trees' rather than letting their moods be dictated by Instagram 'likes'

  • The actress, 40, reveals that no one uses social media in her house
  • Winslet says she wants children to 'climb trees and dance in the rain'
  • Mum-of-three believes sites 'tamper' with development and confidence

Kate Winslet says she and her husband Ned Rocknroll have banned social media in their house and because teenagers should be outside 'climbing trees or dancing in the rain'.

In an interview with Jenni Murray on Radio 4's Woman's Hour, the mother-of-three explained her fears about the negative effects of relying on Instagram 'likes' to feel good - despite Murray's comments that it's 'ironic' she take such a stance while appearing in Steve Job, a film all about the godfather of technology.

The actress who has previously blamed Instagram for eating disorders in teenage girls, justified her decision explaining that no one in her house has ever used social media sites.

Glitter in grey like Kate in Badgley Mischka

Kate Winslet shows off her toned arms in a Badgley Mischka Collection dress from Fall 2015. The silk jersey clings to all the right places and the sequin embellished top draws the eye to your collarbones. The racerback style will emphasize your shoulders so make sure to wear your hair up like Kate if you love them or keep it wavy and cascading if you're not crazy about them

With fall approaching and all those charity galas in full swing, this would be an excellent addition to your formal attire wardrobe. The unique cut and color will allow you to stand out in a sea of black. The sporty style also seems like it's easy to dance in for those wonderful gala after parties.

Sadly this exact one is sold out, but check out our edit below for similar styles or head over to Shopbop to see more designs by Badgley Mischka. The one from ChicNova is under $20 and absolute steal but we love the one from Joanna Chen the most with it's beautifully embellished back.

She said: 'I don't feel I need it and neither does my husband and as a consequence why would the children?

'They would only be having it because their friends have got it that not a reason to have anything. It's just a trend and I don't like following trends anyway.'

The Berkshire born actress has three children: Mia, 14, whose father is Extraordinary Rendition director Jim Threapleton, and whom she divorced in 2001 following a three-year marriage; Joe, 11, whose father is Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes and; Bear, 23 months with her with third and current husband Ned Rocknroll, born Smith.

Winslet admitted the power of social media 'scares me' in an impassioned diatribe against sites such as Twitter and Facebook.

She said: "They [children] don't need Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Children should be outside climbing trees and dancing in the rain, they just don't need it.'

The actress added: 'Self esteem for a teenager is everything, it's huge, particularly, I think, for a teenage girl and if that girl is posting pictures of herself on her Instagram of how she did her hair or the way she did her make-up for an event or outfit she then will have her mood dictated entirely by how many likes or dislikes she got.

'And ultimately that 's going to affect her self esteem and how she views herself - those likes and dislikes that are often coming from complete strangers.

'So just simple compliments and praise, they morph and mutate into something else entirely and that scares me.'

In a recent interview with the Sunday Times Kate revealed that she and third husband Ned Rocknroll have agreed to charge their phones downstairs in separate rooms at bedtime and they 'practically kiss them (the phones) goodnight' as she worries about their addictiveness.

Convinced the use of social media will have a detrimental effect on her children's development she said: 'I want my children to grow up feeling confident in themselves because they're funny, because smart and because can hang out with grown ups as a well as children and because they can run and play and laugh - those are the things that build who a person really is and those are the things that will hopefully be everlasting in them as individuals

'I worry social media genuinely does tamper with that development and as a parent it does concern me and that's why we don't have it.'
