Making a splash! Justin Bieber gets soaked as he dances in the rain during finale performance at AMAs

Justin Bieber closed out the American Music Awards with a spectacular performance of three of his hits.

The 21-year-old star got completely soaked as rain fell from the ceiling of the Microsoft Theater for his last two songs of the night.

As the lights came up at the end of Sorry, Bieber's long blonde locks were seen stuck to his face and his hoodie hanging heavy and dripping with water.

He was dressed casually - and not waterproof - for the show and covered his head in a grey and black baseball cap.

If the weight of his jeans soaking up the water slowed him down, he certainly didn't show it.

Bieber was introduced onto stage by Ciara and showed off his vocal prowess with an acoustic version of his song What Do You Mean? while accompanied by a guitarist on stage.

Next up was an energetic performance of Where Are Ü Now as he moved along with several backing dancers.

The pop star started off the song by somberly singing the first verse but dropped the mic and broke into dance as the tempo kicked up speed.

As the music moved onto his next track the heavens opened and rain fell from the roof.

Water poured down making puddles which the singer kicked with his fancy footwork for dramatic effect.

Earlier in the evening Bieber - along with electro producers Skrillex and Diplo - won the award for Collaboration of the Year.

The crooner wasn't pictured with Selena Gomez during the evening even though the duo were seen enjoying a romantic night together on Friday.

On the red carpet Bieber donned a Nirvana shirt with ripped jeans.

The singer honoured the grunge band - which won the Favorite Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Artist 20 years ago - in an oversized T-shirt.

Somewhat predictably, Nirvana fans quickly took to Twitter to voice their outrage at his wardrobe choice.

Most bet heavily that he would struggle to name a song, while the same odds were offered that Kurt Cobain's ghost was similarly outraged.

Fans had expected and hoped he might walk the red carpet with old flame Selena - who was performing on the night - after the two sparked rumours of a rekindled romance during a night out together on Friday.

The two singers were seen getting close as they spent time together in Beverly Hills, with Selena putting her arm around her chart-topper ex - soon after his public declaration of ongoing love for his teenage sweetheart in a rendition of My Girl at the Montage Beverly Hills hotel.

The former couple looked very close again as they navigated the streets in deep conversation.

As the Heart Wants What It Wants songstress fell a step behind Justin, she was spotted reaching out and tenderly resting her arm on his shoulder.

A new video, originally posted by TMZ, also appeared to hint that Justin had some kind of spell over Selena as he gripped her arm and lead her in a different direction at one point.

She smiles sweetly at him in the footage, shot outside the bar where he serenaded her, and followed him willingly.
