Emma Stone was another shock turn, and  mocked the outrage about the fact she played a character of of one quarter Chinese and one quarter Hawaiian descent in Aloha.

But it was Jon who was the first to garner giggles when he addressed producers behind the camera, telling them: 'I kind of wrote some of my own stuff. I think I gave you guys copies.

'So if you guys want to start, you have the first line. It's 'what's up Hamm Solo?' and I'm like 'how's it going guys?'.

Hamm was not the only famous face to appear in SNL's Star Wars sketch, during a show hosted by actor Matthew McConaughey.

Emma Stone screen tested for Rey and explained: 'Just before we start, I know that the Star Wars universe is very diverse and I don't know if you saw the movie Aloha, but I can play a very convincing part-Asian woman.'

Daisy Ridley, who did land the role of Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, also made a cameo in the sketch and was serenaded by singer Michael Bublé. He sang: 'Another season, another reason for making Wookiee.'

The surprise stars appeared in the sketch alongside the SNL regulars who played the parts of auditionees David Beckham and Sofia Vergara.

Aidy Bryant played Winona Judd and Beck Bennett pretended to be Javier Bardem, while Bobby Moynihan mimicked George Lucas.

Just as noteworthy as the comedy was the music, with curvy stunner Adele performing flawless versions of both Hello and When We Were Young from her new album

The 27-year-old Londoner gave refreshingly stripped back performances of her tunes, allowing her supple vocals to grab all the attention, though she did look in fine form indeed in two eye-catching figure-flattering gowns.

Her performance was certainly a refreshing change from the usual strained vocals viewers of the show are used to getting from its musical guests.

Meanwhile Matthew McConaughey, who was hosting SNL for the first time in 12 years, joked during his opening monologue: 'I'm pretty sure everything tonight's going to go okay, okay, okay. That's not what you thought I was going to say, was it?'

The actor explained the origin of his catchphrase 'alright, alright, alright' and revealed he first uttered the words while filming Dazed and Confused.

He told the audience: 'My character David Wooderson, he has three lines in the entire film, but one of those lines is what I like to call a 'launchpad line'.

'A launchpad line is a line where, if the character really believes it, then I feel like I could write a whole book on this character.'

McConaughey explained that he had been called in for a make-up test when director Richard Linklater asked him to shoot an extra, unscripted scene where Wooderson picks up a girl at a drive-thru.

He said: 'I tell myself Wooderson's about four things. He's about cars, weed, rock and roll and chicks.

'I look around where I am. I say, well I'm in my 70s Chevelle. That's one. I've got Slater riding shotgun so I'm definitely getting high. That's two. We've got Ted Nugent playing Stranglehold on the 8-track, so that's three.

'At this point I hear over the intercom 'action'. I look up across the drive-thru at this red headed intellectual and I say to myself 'Buddy, you've got three out of four. Alright, alright, alright'.'

As well as raising cheers with his monologue, McConaughey joined the SNL cast members for a string of sketches – including a spoof of musical guest Adele's video for Hello.

McConaughey and the SNL cast starred in a skit based around an awkward family Thanksgiving dinner.

With the Magic Mike star playing a grey-haired granddad, the family eased the tense atmosphere by miming to Hello.

After breaking out into song around the table, the scene cut to a spoof version of Adele's black and white video and ended with McConaughey sporting a blonde wig and fur coat.

McConaughey took part in sketches which saw him playing a 3D printed man at a technology conference, a small town resident protesting against a proposed Amtrak station and a contestant on a game show called Should You Chime In On This?

The Oscar winner also played a long-haired, bearded daytime talk show chef high on oven cleaner fumes and a guitarist failing to get to grips with blues music.

Joining SNL regular Kenan Thompson for the recurring Charlie's Blues Shack skit, McConaughey sang struggled to write lyrics about heartache and instead sang about marriage and fantasy football.

Thompson looked stunned as he sang: 'I took a cab down to the airport, the driver said 'have a good flight', I said 'you too' and it's been bugging me all night.'

But he appeased the blues vocalist with the line: 'I used to work at Facebook, but I quit and sold my shares. Now I'm suicidal, all my friends are billionaires.'
