Michael Jordan finally settles with grocery chain Jewel-Osco six years after they used his name in an ad without asking permission

  • Former NBA star took action against Jewel-Osco for a 2009 ad
  • It featured his number, 23, and words that implied he endorsed Jewel
  • On Friday, Jordan and his lawyers reached an undisclosed settlement
  • He settled similar case with another chain, Dominick's, in August for $8.9m

Former NBA star Michael Jordan has finally settled his case against supermarket chain Jewel-Osco for using his name in an ad without asking permission.

The sportsman appeared in a 2009 Sports Illustrated ad for the grocery company, which implied his endorsement.

Finally, six years after Jordan took action against the firm, he has reached a multi-million-dollar settlement. The money will be given to charity.

The settlement comes three months after a jury ordered the now-defunct Dominick's grocery chain to pay Jordan $8.9 million for a similar case of misrepresentation in an ad campaign.

The Jewel ad in a 2009 limited edition of Sports Illustrated featured a pair of red-and-white sneakers emblazoned with his number (23), applauding 'a fellow Chicagoan who was "just around the corner" for so many years.'

The Dominick ad also featured sneakers with 23 on them, plus a cut-out $2 Dominick's coupon.

Jewel and Jordan were set for trial in December, but a judge said they may be interested in a quick resolution given the Dominick's judgment.

Attorneys disclosed settlement talks in October.

Jordan spokeswoman Estee Portnoy says the deal was reached last week. Jordan will donate the money.

'I can confirm that Michael Jordan has reached a settlement in the Dominick's and Jewel lawsuits,' Portnoy told CBS on Sunday.

'He will be contributing the net settlement proceeds to Chicago-area charities, the names of which will be announced before the end of the year.

'And we can give no other information, as the settlement requires confidentiality.'

It's unclear how the deal affects the earlier judgment. Dominick's operated under supermarket chain Safeway, which merged with Jewel parent Albertsons.

Albertsons spokesman Brian Dowling says terms are confidential.

'But we are pleased to have reached a resolution of these matters,' Dowling said in a statement.
