Fans were astonished by the 'Nazi symbolism' in new scenes released from the hotly anticipated Star Wars movie.

The new TV trailer shows a legion of stormtroopers giving their evil leader a Nazi salute as he addresses the masses from a stage in scenes reminiscent of the German leader's famous speeches.

The symbolism wasn't lost on fans, who have dubbed the legion of bad guys - known as the First Order - 'Nazis in space'.

The stormtroopers, in their white suits, are also stood beside a group of men in black uniform, similar to what was worn by Hitler's secret police, known as the Gestapo.

One fan, Shane Ongley, wrote: 'They're really going for that Nazi imagery,' after watching the latest video set to be shown on TV to advertise the new movie.

On Twitter, Danny Grootveld wrote: 'Wow. #TheFirstOrder = like the new Nazi's in space? Check out the #Stormtroopers' gesture.'

It's the latest in a series of TV ads advertising Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the newest in the franchise that is tipped to become the highest grossing film of the year and possibly all time.

Last month, when the official trailer was released, fans joked that it 'broke the internet' after it was viewed more than 100million times in 48 hours.

Tickets for the film, released on December 18, went on sale at the same time and the feverish demand led cinema websites to crash, unable to cope with the monumentally high volume of visitors.

Since then, the studio - Lucasfilm, which is owned by Disney - has regularly released new scenes which have kept fans chomping at the bit for more information on the movie, which follows on from Return Of The Jedi.

In the latest TV ad, there are extended scenes from an epic air battle between X wings and TIE fighters, with red and green lasers lighting up every area of the screen.

There is also an extension of a scene shown in the trailer in which main character Finn - played by John Boyega - battles a storm trooper with a lightsaber amid chaotic scenes in a forest

It follows another advert released shortly before in what fans have dubbed a Space Opera, with short clips being revealed on a regular basis as the hype grows for JJ Abrams new sci-fi.

The last clip also appears to show a character not seen before that looks similar to Nien Nunb, who was Lando Calrissian’s co-pilot on the Millennium Falcon during the Battle of Endor.

Fans are speculating as to whether it is a pilot of the same species or the same character, returning to battle the forces of evil years after Return Of The Jedi.

Fans are also talking about extra shots of the robot BB-8, a spherical bot which is seen rolling around the forest after one of the female leads Rey, played by Daisy Ridley

There is also an extension of a scene shown in the trailer in which main character Finn - played by John Boyega - battles a storm trooper with a lightsaber amid chaotic scenes in a forest.

The storm trooper seems to have a new kind of lightsaber which he thrusts out to his side as he invites Finn to attack, and the two engage in a brutal fight which sends sparks flying from their weapons as they clash together.

It also offers a few extra shots of the robot BB-8, a spherical bot which is seen rolling around a ship and following one of the female leads Rey, played by Daisy Ridley.
