How Carly Simon rushed to tell her psychiatrist about passionate night with Warren Beatty - only to hear that she was not the first patient of the day to say that

  • Singer was a rising star on tour when Warren Beatty came to her hotel
  • She spent a passionate night with him, rushed to tell shrink the next day
  • But her shrink revealed she was not the first patient to say that that day

Smitten and exhausted, Carly Simon was brimming with excitement when she arrived at her psychiatrist's office one morning in the early 1970s.

She had just spent one ravenous night in a hotel room with Hollywood heartthrob Warren Beatty.

But after recounting the entire passionate experience, her therapist said something that brought her crashing back down to reality.

'Under the circumstances, I can't withhold this,' the shrink said. 'You are not my first patient of the day who spent the night with Warren Beatty last night.'

Simon was just the third patient of the day.

For rising star Simon, it was a shattering revelation that taught her a lot about the industry early on - and forms a pivotal moment in her new memoir Boys In The Trees.

In it, she has also revealed she was involved in sexual encounters at age seven with a boy in his teens.

The 70-year-old singer told her older sisters at the time, but they refused to believe her, the singer told People in an article on Wednesday.

The Oscar and Grammy winner said of the encounter: 'It was heinous. It changed my view about sex for a long time.'

Her sisters didn't believe her until more than 60 years later when they read an advance copy of her new book.

'Neither of them were at all aware of what had happened to me. I told them the first year that it was happening, and they thought I was just trying to be one of the bigger girls,' she said.

Simon's mother must have learned of the escapades and she banned the boy one summer from their home.

THE WARREN BEATTY VERSE: SIMON REVEALS SECOND STANZA IS ABOUT THE HOLLYWOOD STAR

You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive

Well you said that we made such a pretty pair

And that you would never leave

But you gave away the things you loved and one of them was me

I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee

Clouds in my coffee, and...

The Nobody Does It Better singer said she was 'devastated' because she believed she was in a romance.

'Your libido overpowers everything! You're so libidinous even at the age of nine and ten. And sometimes there’s an outlet there. I bet in many more cases than we know about there is,' she said.

Simon said she kept quiet about the incidents even with her child psychologist in hopes of keeping it going.

The singer also finally confirmed on Wednesday that ex-boyfriend Warren Beatty is one of the people she slams in her most famous song.

Ever since its release in November 1972, fans have been speculating who You're So Vain was written about and she told People that those who had guessed the 78-year-old actor were correct.

'I have confirmed that the second verse is Warren,' she revealed.

When asked if he knew, she of course replied: 'Warren thinks the whole thing is about him!'

The singer said the No. 1 hit is about three men - including Beatty - though she isn't naming the others.

She said she doesn't think she'll ever reveal who verses one and three refer to, or 'at least until they know it's about them.'

The interview was accompanied by excerpts from her upcoming memoir Boys in the Trees

The 384-page book is set for release on Tuesday.

In it, she claims she 'adored' Beatty, who even tried do dissuade her from marrying her first husband James Taylor.

'I adored him,' she said. 'He tried to get me not to marry James. He said "He's a drug addict".'

Simon was married to Taylor from 1972 to 1983, but also had romantic involvement with the likes of Mick Jagger, Kris Kristofferson, Jack Nicholson and Cat Stevens - all of whom have been speculative guesses as the subject of the song.

Finally! On Wednesday, exactly 44 years after its release, the 70-year-old told People Magazine that the second verse was about the 78-year-old actor

Throughout the years, Simon has revealed clues in dribs and drabs, revealing at different times the name or names contained the letters A and E, but has always maintained it was about more than one person.

For a 2003 charity auction she agreed to tell the highest bidder who the diss track was aimed at, under the condition they not tell anyone else. NBCSports president Dick Ebersol paid $50,000 for the honour, and was permitted to release another clue: the letter R.

In 2010 she revealed she had hidden the name, whispered backwards, in a re-recording of the song, which many heard as 'David'.

It was subsequently reported that the song was actually not about a lover at all, but rather openly gay record producer David Geffen, because he was supposedly giving preferential treatment to her label-mate Joni Mitchell.

Simon's publicist denied this, but her website has also denied the song was about Beatty in the past too.

She went on to marry poet James Hart in 1987 and divorced 20 years later - 'he turned out to be gay' she says in the book.

She is currently in a nine year relationship with 59-year-old surgeon Richard Koehler.

In her book, Carly opens up about her tumultuous decade-long marriage to Taylor, how they ended up continuously cheating on each other, and the 'electricity' she felt when she first encountered Mick Jagger.

She describes how she first saw Taylor as a drawing on the cover of Time Magazine, telling her sister Joey 'I'm going to marry that man' - before doing exactly that.

The first night they met they ended up in bed together - although Taylor insisted it wasn't for sex.

After meeting for the first time backstage at one of his concerts in New York in 1971, Simon revealed the first thing she said was to offer him a home 'cooked lunch sometime', to which he replied 'what about tonight?'

After going back to apartment, Taylor asked: "Could we go lie down on your bed? I mean just to 'lie down'."

'He spoke like a southern gentleman asking is he might remove his rain boots in the mud room,' she recalled. 'After that first night we spent hardly a night apart for many years.'

But before they married, Carly had 'a flirtation' with Mick Jagger, who was in the studio when she was recording You're So Vain and can be heard doing uncredited backing vocals.

'The farther away we stood, the closer we got. Electricity. That's what it was,' she remembered. 'I wanted to touch his neck and he was looking at my lips.

'The electricity was raw and hardly disguising its power. Having sex would have actually cooled things off.'

Nevertheless, she married Taylor that same year, and had two children together. But the pressures of both being music superstars began to take its toll.

'Our love became bipolar, switching from love to hate, lust to loathing, and back again, sometimes within a day,' she said.

In 1979 he admitted cheating with one of his backup dancers, later confessing that she hadn't been the first, prompting Simon to have an affair of her own.

They eventually split in 1983. Simon - who still lives in the house they shared in Martha's Vineyard - says she still loves him, but Taylor hasn't spoke to her in years.

'I think, "What did I do?" The answer is I don't know.

'I still want to heal him, I still want to make him all right,' she said. 'And I love him so much.'

'My incredible loyalty to him, in spite of the fact that he has treated me without any regard, has been so painful to me for so long,' she continued. 'But, through the course of writing the book, I really started to understand that I could love and not be loved. And that was the big realization for me, that it doesn't have to be a two-way street.'
