According to Patch, authorities did not immediately identify Mr Ivens as an FBI agent.

Investigators believe Ivens left his home on foot and could be in a rugged Verdugo Mountains, a range east of Burbank, California.

They said a gun is missing from his home on Scott Road.

However, police do not believe he has been involved in criminal activity, KTLA reported.

About 40 sheriff's department rescuers were participating in the search for Ivens, who was described as an avid hiker and runner.

Ivens was described by FBI colleagues as well liked. He has been working for the FBI for the past three years in the national security area.

Stephen Gomez of the FBI told reporters that foul play was not suspected and Ivens was not believed to pose a threat to others.

They describe him as bespectacled, 6ft tall, 160 pounds, with brown eyes and receding hair.
