He's the television phenomenon everyone in the country has fallen in love with - well, almost everyone.

Meet Gus, the cat that looks just like Mog from Sainsbury's Christmas advert, but who hates it so much he turns his back on the television every time it comes on.

The four-year-old exotic shorthair from Rugby, Warwickshire, can't stand all the attention his doppelganger is getting after the retailer's commercial became a smash hit on the small screen.

But it's only got worse for the fiery tabby after owners Tom and Laura Reed, 27 and 31, bought their seven-month-old son Henry his very own cuddly Mog toy.

Mrs Reed, who works in marketing, said: 'It's really funny but a little bit awkward.

'As soon as we saw the advert we all thought Gus looked exactly like Mog and Henry absolutely loved it so we had to buy one.

'It's backfired a bit though because Gus sees Mog as a rival and gets really jealous.

'It's even worse when the advert comes on - he sulks really badly and even turns his back to the TV.

'I think he fancies himself as a bit of a show-cat so he's disgusted with all the attention Mog gets and it's even worse now Henry's playing with the toy all the time.'

Mr Reed, who works in government administration, and his wife bought the toy because of how rough Henry could be with Gus in an attempt to teach him to be more gentle.

Mrs Reed said: 'Henry's only little but we both thought he was being a bit rough with Gus so we bought the toy Mog to get him to be a bit more careful.

'It's a lovely advert, particularly at Christmas time. Apart from Gus we all really like it!

'I remember the Mog stories from when I was a young girl so I think part of me is re-living my childhood but the similarities to Gus make it even more special.'

The supermarket chain has been under fire after selling out of the cuddly toy cats less than two weeks after the ad was launched - with the Mogs selling for up to £90 on eBay.
