ITV confirm three-year deal to broadcast hit talent show The Voice with kids spin-off from 2017

Rumours surfaced earlier this year.

But ITV have confirmed they've signed a three-year deal to screen The Voice from 2017 - complete with a children's version of the hit singing competition.

The broadcasters signed a deal with production company Talpa Global for the competition, plus a three-season commitment for ITV2 spin-off show and two series of The Voice Kids.

Announced on Monday, it comes after the BBC relinquished the hit television show - a BBC1 priority for four years - earlier this month.

After refusing to enter into a 'bidding war', the corporation reluctantly announced that the fifth series, airing in January 2016, would be its last.

The change-over coincided with the departure of both Tom Jones and Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson, who said he wanted to 'bow out gracefully'.

'They would want to have a totally new show,' he told The Sun, adding that he wished the BBC had fought to retain the show. 'It's the only way things get better,' he explained. 'It's a huge part of people's lives. It's what the great British public want on their Saturday night. They don't want to be force-fed something educational.'

Prior to that, Rita Ora left the series to join X Factor, while Kylie Minogue also declined to return after just one series.

Speaking about the acquisition, ITV's director of television, Peter Fincham said: 'ITV is the natural home of big entertainment so we are thrilled that 'The Voice' and 'The Voice Kids' are both joining our family alongside brilliant shows like 'The X Factor', 'Britain's Got Talent', 'Saturday Night Takeaway' and 'I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here!'

'The Voice' has become a global hit since it first launched in Holland in 2010 and now has around 65 local versions airing in 180 countries while 'The Voice Kids' has almost 30 local adaptations.

Meanwhile, John de Mol - who created The Voice and is founder of Talpa Global - has expressed his excitement at the news.

He shared: 'We are delighted that 'The Voice' has found a new home at ITV.

'With the addition of 'The Voice Kids' we are excited about working with ITV in 2017 to develop and expand 'The Voice' experience for the UK audience after completing what we think will be a fantastic upcoming season on the BBC, who have been a great partner.'
