A missing mother’s body has been found hanging from a tree near her home in Long Island, police believe.
Lilia Aucapina, 40, of Sagaponack in Southampton, has been missing since October 10.
A hunter called authorities after finding the body in the woods between Sprig Tree Path and Toppings Path on Saturday morning.
Southampton attorney Colin Astarita, who represents Aucapina’s estranged husband, said police have identified the body as Aucapina’s, Newsday reported.
However, formal identification using dental records is yet to take place.
Astarita said Southampton Town Police are investigating the possibility of suicide.
He said: ‘[The family] are all beside themselves at this point’.
Aucapina reportedly text her 21-year-old son and daughter, 14, the day she vanished, writing in Spanish: ‘Remember that Mommy always loves you.’
But Astarita said she had a ‘happy life’ and large family – and had never shown any sign of depression,
He added that officers had searched the area the body was found in with police dogs last month, but denser foliage may had hidden the body.’
The mother-of-two’s disappearance had led to a massive appeal from her family, who distributed flyers and repeatedly appealed for help in finding her.
Aucapina, a house cleaner originally from Ecuador, was last seen walking on Montauk Highway in Wainscott on the morning of October 10 after an argument with her husband and brother in a parking lot.
They had fought after she was seen with another man.
Carlos Aucapina, 50, was arrested shortly after she was reported missing.
He was charged with violating his wife’s order of protection and questioned about her disappearance.
