Brangelina's film romance hits the rocks: Couple's romantic drama By The Sea has only taken £300,000 at the box office and is being dropped by cinemas across the U.S.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have had the biggest flop of their careers.

Their romantic drama By the Sea has taken barely £300,000 at the box office and is being dropped by cinemas across the US.

Miss Jolie, 40, wrote and directed the film which is set in France in the 1970s and tells the story of the break-up of a couple, played by her and 51-year-old husband Pitt.

It took just £3,000 on its opening weekend and one reviewer said its daily box office earnings did not match what Jolie and her family of six spend on lunch.

A review on the Roger Ebert film site said Jolie ‘had produced a film that is such a borderline unendurable exercise in vapid self-indulgence that it almost feels like an exceptionally straight-faced parody of empty-headed star vehicles’.

Jolie and Pitt met and fell in love on the last film they made together, Mr and Mrs Smith in 2005. That took over £300million at the box office.

Jolie’s last effort as a director was the Second World War drama Unbroken, which made a respectable £100million.

Pitt’s last hit was the zombie movie World War Z, which was released in 2013.

By the Sea is scheduled to be released in the UK on December 11.
