Footballer Jamie Vardy is at the centre of a family feud between his parents and his wife-to-be, it emerged today.

The striker's career has never been better, with him scoring in his tenth consecutive game at the weekend and his Leicester City team sitting top of the Premier League.

But behind the scenes, the player has not spoken to his parents for over a year due to an apparent row over his fiancée Becky Nicholson.

Vardy's parents, Phil and Lisa, say they will not be going to the couple's wedding ceremony, planned for next year summer.

Father Phil has said the row between them and their son has been going on ever since Miss Nicholson 'came on the scene'.

He told The Sun: 'It's a real shame and very sad. I have given him 22 years of life to get him to the pinnacle of his career, and I can't enjoy it... it really upsets me.'

Vardy's grandfather Gerald Clewes also told the paper 'that woman' had come between the 28-year- old footballer and his mother.

The player has not spoken about his father's comments, but Miss Nicholson posted a message on Twitter last night suggesting the row won't come between them.

The couple have a one-year-old daughter together and Miss Nicholson has two children from previous relationships.

Miss Nicholson, 33, is obviously looking forward to the wedding, and her Twitter biography simply says: 'Soon to be Mrs @vardy7'

Vardy previously revealed the couple's planned wedding day next summer had to be changed when it emerged it clashed with the start of the European Championships, which he now hopes to play in for England.

After initially playing in the lower leagues, Vardy has burst onto the scene this season, equally the Premier League record for the number of consecutive matches a player has scored in and breaking into the England team.

He and his fiancée celebrated his equalling of the record together on Saturday night and she posted a picture of a bottle of champagne she had prepared for him before he returned home from his team's game with Newcastle United.

His arrival at the top of the game comes after he was given an electronic tag and a curfew for an assault outside a nightclub.

His father said he had driven the player to and from games during the curfew to ensure he got home in time.

Vardy previously revealed that in some matches he would have be substituted after 60 minutes and jump in his father's car to be home before the 6pm curfew imposed on him by the courts.

'It was a case of hoping that we were winning, taking me off and making sure I was home,' he added. 

The player said the curfew had 'affected his family' because it meant he was 'in the house constantly'.

Today, he was continue to celebrate his equalling of Ruud Van Nistelrooy's record and he tweeted: 'To every single person that has supported me and never doubted me...Thank you.....I'm still pinching myself!'
