The New Orleans police chief said that the shooting was not immediately connected to the parade, and may have been gang-related
He said that the first gunman had run into the crowd and fired at least ten times as those in the park ran for their lives and tried to grab the children that were with them.
The witness said that he turned around and saw four other shooters and then heard bursts of gunfire two minutes later.
WWLTV reported that around 500 had been at the park at the time of the shooting, where two separate groups are thought to have been shooting at each other.
Nine Times Social Aide & Pleasure Club's 'second line' parade had finished nearby, and officers that had been monitoring the event were on the scene of the shooting immediately.
Around 500 people, including some who had come from a parade, were thought to have been at Bunny Friend Park at the time of the violence
One witness told Daily Mail Online that terrified witnesses scooped up their children and ran for cover when a gunman ran into the park
Bunny Friend is a popular spot for those who participate in the parade to go afterwards, though police said that the gathering was unplanned and did not have a permit.
The extent of injuries to those taken to hospital was not immediately known, though no deaths had been reported as of midnight.
New Orleans Police Chief Michael Harrison said that others could have been taken to the hospital in private vehicles.
He told WDSU that the shooting may be gang-related and was not immediately connected to the parade.
A witness told Daily Mail Online that another shooting had occurred near the park earlier in the day.

During a press conference later in the evening, the city's mayor and police chief said that there were teenagers at the video shoot, but no children.
However, witnesses and social media users angry about the explosion of violence said that there had been.
'IT WAS A GOOD DAY CHILLING WITH THE SON UNTIL WE HAD TO PLAY DODGE BALL WITH BULLETS,' Instagram user DSN World said.
Second line parades are a New Orleans tradition that features a band, dancing and hundreds of marchers, normally held on Sunday afternoons.
