The site adds that only two albums have ever sold more than 500,000 in a week.

Take That’s Progress notched up 518,601 sales in November 2010, and Oasis’s Be Here Now, is the record holder with 695,761 in its first chart week in August 1997.

Official Charts Company chief executive Martin Talbot said: 'With this mammoth first day sales tally, Adele has taken a further step towards greatness.

'Over the next few days we will find out whether it can pass the magic half a million sales mark.'

According to the Guardian, she is predicted to enjoy immense success in the US as well. The site says forecasters predict she will sell at least 2.5million copies in the first week.

Despite her huge success, Adele remains down-to-earth and fooled her biggest fans by undergoing a facial transformation for a sketch during her BBC special on Friday night.

The singer was unrecognisable once again when she posted a frightfully funny snap toInstagram, wearing a face mask cloth with her hair in rollers.

The Hello singer's face was completely hidden behind the material as she shared her secret beauty routine with her legions of fans.

She's often complimented for her flawless complexion and radiant facial beauty, and the snap gave fans an indication of just how she achieves such impressive results.

Taken in what appears to be a hotel room, Adele wore a plunging black top which revealed a hint of her bra strap as she patiently waited for the self-applied beauty treatment to take effect.

With just two small holes for her eyes and one for her to breathe through, the singer remained open-mouthed.

Adele simply captioned the post: 'I woke up like this'. It has proved popular with fans, having gathered more than 250,000 likes.

She later posted a shot of her face being made over, with impressive smokey eyes.

And not for the first time this week has she appeared unrecognisable. The Hello hitmaker wore a wig and prosthetic nose and chin for a hilarious sketch during Friday's  Adele at the BBC.

The sketch saw her go undercover to impersonate herself as singer 'Jenny', at an audition for a fictitious pilot programme at Wimbledon Theatre.

Nine other real impersonators had no idea their idol was in their midst until Adele performed on stage and left them stunned.
