When Tottenham play like this, they make you want to believe they can break the spell in English football and break into the top four.
At times they were that good, stylish and composed as they swept aside a West Ham team that has beaten Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Crystal Palace on the road this season. Here they ran into a dead end.
Harry Kane led the line magnificently, scoring twice and causing mayhem and confusion in West Ham’s chaotic defence. The Tottenham forward, who has scored 12 times in 14 London derbies, was excellent.

And with it Tottenham stay fifth but close to within four points of Leicester City at the top of the table.
West Ham remain sixth, but must find a Plan B it appears. Slaven Bilic's side badly missed Dimitri Payet this afternoon.

90+2min: Another Tottenham chance! Demeble's cut-back is clumsily diverted over the crossbar by Reid with a sliced clearance.
90+1min: Final change for Spurs as Kane departs in favour of Tom Carroll. There will be three added minutes.
90min: Spurs nearly grab a fifth! Mason striking against the far post with a 23-yard effort!
87min: Some reward for the West Ham fans who haven't departed, as Manuel Lanzini creams home a drive into the near post top corner.
84min: Another change for Tottenham as Josh Onomah comes on for Son.
83min: Destruction derby! The three points are certainly Tottenham's now as Kyle Walker curls a shot into the far post corner with the outside of his boot from 18 yards. What a finish from the full-back.
82min: Mason nearly puts the game beyond doubt for Tottenham, snapping a shot on goal from 20 yards, which is well saved by Adrian, before the West Ham keeper then denied the midfielder on the follow up. Spurs have had about six clear cut opportunities this afternoon.
80min: Final change for West Ham, and here is some good news for Hammers fans as Alex Song is back in action as he replaces Noble.
Tottenham supporters are less than welcome as they boo the former Arsenal midfielder.
75min: More handbags. This time it's Walker and Sakho getting involved.
Walker is unhappy with a push in the back from the striker, before an incident off the ball sees the duo square up, get separated, then booked.
Have these two learned nothing from Alli/Noble earlier?
73min: Couple of half-chances for West Ham. Manuel Lanzini sees a shot deflected wide off Toby Alderweireld, before Winston Reid's header from the set-piece is straight at Hugo Lloris.
71min: It's nearly game over at the Lane as Kyle Walker's fizzing drive across goal just misses out on being diverted in.
Spurs do indeed bring on Mason as Alli departs to a loud ovation from the home fans.
69min: With just over 20 minutes to play, Spurs are looking towards some fresh legs as Ryan Mason prepares to come on.
66min: I'm surprised it's taken over an hour but the handbags are finally out.
Mark Noble petulantly shrugs off Kane, and it leads to him and Alli squaring up before the duo are pulled apart by team-mates, then booked.
Alli is now suspended for Tottenham's game with Chelsea.
63min: Here come the duo as Andy Carroll and Victor Moses depart.
62min: Slaven Bilic is preparing to make his first changes as Nikica Jelavic and Mauro Zarate strip down and prepare to come on.
59min: Set-pieces look like West Ham's best chance of grabbing a goal. A free-kick into the box is nodded across goal by Carroll but Winston Reid can't turn the ball home as Spurs clear.
At the other end, Son picks up possession unmarked on the edge of the box, but takes too long to control the bouncing ball before seeing his shot charged down by recovering defenders.
56min: So is there a way back for West Ham now? Time is on their side but Spurs have looked at their slick best so far. Slaven Bilic looks furious on the WHammers bench.
53min: Another Spurs chance! Son breaks down the right, and although his low shot across goal is parried by Adrian, the West Ham keeper somehow keeps out Eriksen's volley on the follow up rebound.
50min: Harry Kane missed a sitter in the first half but he has made amends here. The striker picks up the ball and from 23 yards and blasts home a low powerful strike under the diving Adrian. Perhaps the West Ham keeper should have done better there?
48min: Spurs come out the blocks pressing for a third goal but like the start of first period West Ham's defence is holding firm. A ball is played squared across the box for Alli, whose first time strike is blocked clear.
West Ham are 2-0 down but are not quite out of this yet. Andy Carroll is picking up the ball for the visitors, and as ever is looking like he has the edge in an aerial tussle.
He could be key for the Hammers in the second half if they are to get back into this game.
Here is his heat map from the first period.

The first 20 minutes of this game were incredibly tight with defences well on top, but since then Spurs have blown away West Ham.
They could quite easily be 4-0 up, but that would have been a harsh scoreline on West Ham who with the aerial presence of Andy Carroll have the potential to trouble the Tottenham defence.
It will be an intriguing second half, that's for sure. Stick with this one, folks...
45min: There will be one added minute in this first half as Tottenham try and carve out a third goal before the break.
42min: West Ham have faded in the latter stages of this half - being picked apart on the counter attack hasn't helped as Carroll fires wildly off target.
39min: Another golden chance for Spurs, and Kane misses badly...very badly!
A fortunate deflection puts the England striker clean through on goal but in front of the England boss Roy Hodgson watching inside White Hart lane he scuffs his shot while one-on-one with Adrian a good five yards wide.
36min: Fifteen minutes ago West Ham were looking rock solid at the back, now they are fortunate not to be 3-0 down!
Son Heung-min creates space inside the box before seeing a shot saved by Adrian, but on the rebound Delle Alli's header bounces back off the crossbar.
33min: Football's a simple game and sometimes the basics work best. Toby Alderweireld simply uses a burst of pace to sprint away from his marker Winston Reid to nod home Eriksen's corner at the near post.
29min: The heads haven't gone down among the West Ham players. In fact they are now pressing Tottenham.
It's arguably the Hammers best spell of the game as Spurs are being put under pressure on the ball.
26min: White Hart Lane is still singing 'Harry Kane is one of our own' when West Ham respond by hitting the crossbar!
Cheikhou Kouyate is a good couple of yards offside when a deflected shot falls for him inside the box, but his spectacular overhead kick rattles against the crossbar. Spurs survive but there would have been HUGE controversy had that gone in!
23min: Breakthrough at the Lane! Delle Alli's shot is blocked into the path of Harry Kane who turns sharply inside the box before lashing home into the roof of the net. Top finish!
20min: It's taken 20 minutes but we finally have a shot on target! Spurs build up patiently inside the West Ham half, before Eriksen eventually collects possession, finding space 23 yards out and rifling a drive via a slight James Tomkins deflection which Adrian leaps to his right to parry to safety.
17min: Top contest this. Spurs just looked like they were starting to threaten as Christian Eriksen dangerously cut across the box before Kyle Walker had a cross cleared.
But the West Ham threat is there. A long ball to Carroll starts a counter which ends with Diafra Sakho's cross from the right being nodded clear.
14min: Spurs have upped the pace and put West Ham on the backfoot with it.
The passing has got quicker among the home team but despite pushing the Hammers back, there is still no breaching that Hammers back four.
11min: West Ham are coming into the game as an attacking sense, winning two corners. Neither cause too much trouble for Spurs though with the latter claimed by Hugo Lloris at his near post.
8min: Well... at least we have a shot. Andy Caroll buys a free-kick out of Eric Dier 30 yards out, but after the ball is played short to Aaron Cresswell, the full-back drives miles over the bar.
6min: As you were. Tottenham continue to probe, looking for a way through West Ham, but the Hammers are looking good here. The defence are under no pressure at all as we wait for the game's first chance.
3min: Spurs are bossing the early possession, but West Ham are sitting comfortably.
Winston Reid and Carl Jenkinson respectably winning the ball and shielding out for a goal kick as Spurs attempt to penetrate the Hammers defence.

There may be a big rivalry between these clubs, but it's all put into perspective as all 22 players huddle in the centre circle at White Hart Lane ahead of 'La Marseillaise', which is played out over the stadium speaker system to the background of applause from the fans.
Always a popular fixture this one and there is hardly a spare seat in the house as the players make their way out on a cold afternoon at White Hart Lane.
'Yes, it is an option [to play Sakho and Carroll up front]. In the same system we can still be two up front especially when you have a quick player like Sakho,' Slaven Bilic told Sky Sports.
'I expect a result every week but so do Spurs and every other manager who has belief in his team.'
'We have to be focused,' Kane told Sky Sports. 'West Ham will try and get a result. We have to be on it, pressing high and bringing energy to the game.
Plenty at stake at White Hart Lane. With both teams on 21 points, an opportunity climb within four points of league leaders Leicester City (still can't believe I'm typing that) adds extra spice to what will already be a heated affair at Spurs... heated in terms of the contest. It's damn cold in north London.

Delle Alli has had one of the biggest impacts on the Premier League season after joining Spurs from MK Dons.
And the midfielder's year got better during the week as he scored on his full England debut against France.
Alli impressed in Tottenham's last game at Arsenal (you can see his heat map below) and Spurs will hope the 19-year-old can star again today. Click on the below link for all his match stats from the Emirates Stadium.

Andy Carroll starts for West Ham United against Tottenham. The striker scored for the Hammers in their 3-1 defeat by Spurs at White Hart Lane three years ago but now hopes his goals can fire West Ham to three points.
But did you know inside Carroll's house is a brand new Tottenham strip for his son Arlo?
For the full story click here as Sportsmail's Jack Gaughan caught up with Carroll in the build up to the game.
He made his West Ham playing debut at White Hart Lane in January 1996, as the Hammers secured a 1-0 win at Tottenham.
Tottenham Hotspur make just one change to the side who impressed in a 1-1 draw at Arsenal before the international break, with Heung Son-min making his first start for the club since returning from injury as he replaces the suspended Erik Lamela.
Andros Townsend features on the bench for the hosts having been recalled to the squad following an in-house ban.
Diafra Sakho is back in the West ham United starting XI followinga thigh injury, and the forward replaces Dimitri Payet who has been ruled out injured for three months.

Because it looks like from this picture West Ham United are moving into the bottled water market.
Can't see them quite pulling it off, even if there is a hidden spring underneath Upton Park. It's going to be a hard sell trying to convince Londoners to switch from Del Boy's highly popular 'Peckham Spring'.
...as well as the usual on pitch inspections, including whether the goal line decision system works.
...and as a result of the recent Paris terror attacks, fans are being searched before entering the ground.
With a pulsating London derby of course!
There's no love lost on and off the pitch these days when Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United meet, so although there is just the one Barclays Premier League game today - it's set to be a fiery affair.
Good afternoon all, welcome to Sportsmail's coverage of Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United.
Follow Sportsmail's coverage of the Barclays Premier League as Tottenham Hotspur host West Ham United in Sunday's only top flight clash.
There is plenty at stake in the London derby, as the sides sitting fifth and sixth in the table go into the game with a chance of moving to within just four points of league leaders Leicester City.
The Hammers will fancy their chances at the Lane, having won two of their last three games there and only failing to claim three straight wins after Harry Kane struck in stoppage time to rescue a point for Spurs last season.
