Spencer Matthews looks chirpy on arrival in the UK after jetting from Australia... after claiming it was NOT his decision to quit I'm A Celeb following steroid addiction reveal

Spencer Matthews has returned to the UK after ending his stint in the I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here jungle earlier this week.

The Made In Chelsea star - who lasted just three days on the ITV show before quitting and revealing a secret steroid addition - landed at Manchester airport after a long-haul flight from Australia on Sunday afternoon.

The 26-year-old reality TV star looked in good spirits as he emerged from the flight, despite the focus on his personal life and focus on his drug-taking.

Earlier in the day, Spencer had revealed that leaving the popular programme had actually not been his choice - although it was previously thought he had quit, he hinted that he had been booted out by show producers.

During a Twitter conversation with fellow TV star Spencer Pratt, the Made In Chelsea star confessed: 'Leaving was obviously not my call! I would do absolutely anything to still be in there. Was loving it!'

An ITV spokesperson declined to comment when approached by MailOnline.

Despite the dramas, he looked notably cheerful as he made his return to the UK, flashing his chest as he went.

He dressed himself in all-black, teaming Adidas tracksuit bottoms with a low-slung vest under a stylish fur-lined black leather jacket.

Still feeling the summer vibe after his very brief jaunt Down Under, the handsome star covered his eyes with a pair of shades.

But the most notable part of his appearance was the huge smile on his face, a clear sign of defiance after the dramas of the last couple of days.

Meanwhile, the London socialite allegedly begged production staff to hand over his stash of pills as he could not cope without them.

A source told The Sun newspaper: 'After a few days he admitted he'd been taking pills and was struggling to cope without them. He wanted staff to pass them over on the sly.

'But ITV were never going to give him steroids, so after much discussion over whether he could continue without them they had to let him go.

'Spencer was desperate to stay but he had to leave there and then. He was devastated, but unfortunately there was no way back from there.'

On Saturday, the 26-year-old – who was previously caught sniffing cocaine - revealed he left the jungle because he was taking drugs in the run-up to the show.

In a statement given to The Mirror newspaper, Spencer candidly revealed that he attempted to hide his addiction from the producers, though his inability to wean himself off of the supplement meant his health could have been compromised in the jungle.

'Why did I leave I'm a Celebrity after just three days? The simple answer is that I screwed up, and have some explaining to do,' the MIC star confessed.

'Shortly after I arrived in Australia I told the production team that I was taking a steroid-based medication that had begun some weeks ago.

'When I started taking this programme of pills it was in preparation for a charity boxing match which, ironically, never took place.'

Confessing the reason behind his drug-taking, he said: 'Vanity, I suppose, had been the reason for wanting to bulk up a bit for the fight. I had intended to come off the pills gradually, but there was no time to do this before I reached the jungle.'

After coming clean to show-makers, Spencer was immediately told he had to leave the show for fears his decision to go cold turkey could have a dire affect on his health.

'My admission to the production team that I was still taking these pills led to the conclusion that it would be unsafe for me to stay in the jungle - a decision which I found extremely hard to stomach.'

'I pushed back but ultimately the show's duty of care prevailed and bags had to be packed.

'Taking these pills was a serious error of judgment, which I hugely regret. I have disappointed my family, friends and fans and would like to apologise.

Signing off his lengthy statement, Spencer praised ITV and expressed his hopes of returning to the show in a future season.

'I would like to thank ITV for the opportunity and their support, they're a class act. I loved every minute of being in the jungle and wish the remaining contestants the best of luck. Hoping for another shot at it someday,' he enthused.

In the wake of his admission, Spencer took to Twitter to reaffirm his apology, writing: 'I have disappointed my family, friends and fans and need to apologise. I would like to thank ITV for the opportunity and their support.

Banished to Snake Rock as soon as he entered the jungle, Spencer's abrupt exit meant that the 26-year-old hunk failed to ever reach the main camp where the rest of his celebrity camp mates resided.

In a previous statement released by ITV, confirming his exit, the network said: 'Spencer Matthews has left the jungle. We're sorry to see him leave.' Meanwhile show hosts Ant and Dec simply stated during Friday night's show: 'We should tell you that Spencer has unexpectedly left the jungle and he will not be returning to the camp. Unfortunately, there is nothing more we can tell you about this.'

A show source later revealed: 'He has left the jungle on medical grounds. He was a great booking and was shaping up to be a great character. We are sorry to see him go.'

Spencer's ex girlfriend Lauren Hutton hit out at the star's decision to leave the jungle on Friday, writing on Twitter: 'Well that lasted long... Even your relationships last longer (just). I think I'd make a better contestant...'

Spencer's close pal Jamie Laing was quick to defend his BFF though, tweeting: 'F*** off you leaching random' by replying directly to her tweet, in full view of their combined 1M followers.

She replied: 'Classy as always, love (emoji) to u & love (emoji) to Spencer (emoji)' before he referenced their split when he bit back 'The only thing you're class at is being dumped.'

Despite only lasting three days in the jungle, Spencer appeared to make quite the impression as camp mate Ferne McCann predicted sparks were flying between the TV personality and former Geordie Shore beauty Vicky Pattison.

Heading to the Bush Telegraph to chat about her new digs, Ferne said: 'Vicky and Spencer are cool... I think they might fancy each other. Just an observation!'
