Spencer Matthews is heading to rehab after revealing an addiction to steroids saw his early departure from the I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! jungle.

The Made In Chelsea star returned to the UK from Australia on Sunday afternoon, landing in Manchester after spending just three days in the competition for the ITV programme.

And now the 26-year-old is said to be seeking help for his reliance on the drug, and it's all down to his management and family urging him to do so.

A source close to the star told The Mirror: 'He has one of the best teams in the business around him and they are having talks about how they can save his career.

'Their main priority is looking after Spencer and making sure he is on the straight and narrow.'

The insider added that Spencer's 'family are distraught because they didn't know what was going on. This has come out of the blue.'

A representative for Spencer declined to comment when approached by MailOnline.

It's thought that his habit and reliance on the Class C drug could come at a cost, and that his lucrative endorsements and partnerships, as well as popular club appearances, may be rocked by his revelation.

Concerns: The Made In Chelsea hunk has caused his management and family to worry for him, and they are said to be urging him to rehab to wean him off the steroids

TV producers had become aware of an issue when he reportedly asked to be given steroids while in the jungle, clearly unable to wean himself off.

The events that occured saw him forced to leave I'm A Celebrity early, after being in the jungle for just three days while in Snake Rock, an exiled portion of the outback that meant he never actually got to meet the other contestants on the show

On Saturday, the handsome lothario - who has previously been caught sniffing cocaine - revealed he had left the entire experience early because he was taking drugs in the run-up to the show.

In a statement given to The Mirror newspaper, Spencer candidly revealed that he attempted to hide his addiction from the producers, though his inability to wean himself off of the supplement meant his health could have been compromised in the jungle.

'Why did I leave I'm a Celebrity after just three days? The simple answer is that I screwed up, and have some explaining to do,' he confessed.

He'll be missed: Spencer did have time to take part in a few challenges while exiled to Snake Rock, including a scrabble game alongside brief co-stars Jorgie Porter and Brian Friedman

'Shortly after I arrived in Australia I told the production team that I was taking a steroid-based medication that had begun some weeks ago.

'When I started taking this programme of pills it was in preparation for a charity boxing match which, ironically, never took place.'

Giving reason behind his drug-taking, he said: 'Vanity, I suppose, had been the reason for wanting to bulk up a bit for the fight. I had intended to come off the pills gradually, but there was no time to do this before I reached the jungle.'

After coming clean to show-makers, Spencer was immediately told he had to leave the show for fears his decision to go cold turkey could have a dire affect on his health.

'My admission to the production team that I was still taking these pills led to the conclusion that it would be unsafe for me to stay in the jungle - a decision which I found extremely hard to stomach.'

Apology: In a statement, Spencer revealed that he 'screwed up', and he also sent a litany of tweets apologising for his actions and for disappointing his family

Full of hope: Last Wednesday, the reality TV star had looked chirpy and excited as he prepared to head to the jungle as one of this year's latecomers, along with Ferne McCann and Vicky Pattison

'I pushed back but ultimately the show's duty of care prevailed and bags had to be packed.

'Taking these pills was a serious error of judgment, which I hugely regret. I have disappointed my family, friends and fans and would like to apologise.

Signing off his lengthy statement, Spencer praised ITV and expressed his hopes of returning to the show in a future season.

'I would like to thank ITV for the opportunity and their support, they're a class act. I loved every minute of being in the jungle and wish the remaining contestants the best of luck. Hoping for another shot at it someday,' he enthused.

In the wake of his admission, Spencer took to Twitter to reaffirm his apology, writing: 'I have disappointed my family, friends and fans and need to apologise. I would like to thank ITV for the opportunity and their support.

What next? According to a source close to the star, he is checking into rehab due to management and family urging him to, in order to save his career and keep him 'on the straight and narrow'

In a previous statement released by ITV, the network said: 'Spencer Matthews has left the jungle. We're sorry to see him leave.'

Meanwhile, I'm A Celebrity's presenters Ant and Dec stated during Friday night's show: 'We should tell you that Spencer has unexpectedly left the jungle and he will not be returning to the camp. Unfortunately, there is nothing more we can tell you about this.'

And, as he made his speedy return to the UK on Sunday - during which he cut a remarkably happy and healthy figure - he hinted that show bosses were the reason for his exit, rather than a choice of his to leave.

During a Twitter conversation with fellow TV star Spencer Pratt earlier in the morning, Spencer confessed: 'Leaving was obviously not my call! I would do absolutely anything to still be in there. Was loving it!'
