Jamie Vardy equalled Premier League record after scoring in 10th consecutive game but Lionel Messi leads the way in Europe... so, who holds record at your club?

  • Jamie Vardy netted for 10th consecutive Premier League game on Saturday
  • Leicester City forward equalled the record set by Ruud van Nistelrooy
  • Lionel Messi scored in 21 La Liga games in a row for Barcelona in 2012-13
  • Gerd Muller holds Bundesliga record having scored in 16 games in a row

Jamie Vardy may have equalled a Premier League record after scoring for the 10th consecutive game against Newcastle on Saturday but the Leicester striker has a long way to go to earn European recognition.

The 28-year-old netted his 13th Premier League goal of a remarkable season and matched former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy's record of notching in 10 games in a row.

Although Vardy has equalled the record on these shores, the former Fleetwood Town forward's goalscoring achievements pale into insignificance when compared to the very best on the continent.

Sportsmail can reveal, somewhat unsurprisingly, that Lionel Messi holds the record across the top five European leagues having netted for 21 consecutive La Liga games during the 2012-13 season.

The Barcelona forward scored an incredible 46 league goals during that season and failed to register in just four La Liga matches that he played in.

His run of scoring in 21 league games on the spin started in November and continued until the final day of the season when Atletico Madrid managed to shut the Argentine out.

Behind Vardy and Van Nistelrooy in the Premier League is Daniel Sturridge, who scored in eight consecutive top-flight games for Liverpool in the 2013-14 season.

Thierry Henry, Ian Wright and Emmanuel Adebayor have all scored in seven league games in a row for Arsenal, a feat matched by all-time Premier League scorer Alan Shearer for Newcastle.

When you think of the great Chelsea goalscorers in the Premier League era, you can't look past Didier Drogba but the Ivorian does not hold the club record for goals in consecutive games.

That accolade goes to journeyman striker Mark Stein, who arrived at Chelsea via Luton, QPR, Oxford United and Stoke before also finding the net in seven consecutive games.

West Ham forward Diafra Sakho and former Southampton striker James Beattie each scored in six consecutive Premier League games.

Teddy Sheringham, Robbie Keane, Rafael van der Vaart and Gareth Bale share the record for Tottenham with each of them scoring in five league games in a row. Harry Kane can add his name to that list if he finds the target against Chelsea next weekend.

Elsewhere in Europe, Gerd Muller holds the Bundesliga record after his run of scoring in 16 consecutive games for Bayern Munich during the 1969-70 campaign.

Muller, who is Bayern's record goalscorer with 365 strikes in the league and more than 500 in all competitions, scored 22 goals during that run of 16 matches.

The record in Serie A is held by former Fiorentina and Roma striker Gabriel Batistuta, who came close to joining Manchester United once upon a time.

The Argentine notched in 11 consecutive league games for the Viola in the 1994-95 season and he went on to top the Serie A goalscoring charts that year with 26 goals.

The record in Ligue 1 is shared by former Yugoslavia international and Nantes striker Vahid Halilhodzic and former Lyon forward Sonny Anderson, who both scored in nine games in a row.
