A witness told the Las Vegas Review Journal the scuffle started between two people, but grew until someone fired eight shots.

Police are yet to make any arrests and said they are not ready to identify a suspect.

Camir told the newspaper Brantley loved 'making people feel better' and always smiled.

'I still don't know how to feel. He's not gone until I see him in a casket,' she added.

A makeshift memorial with roses, teddy bears candles was set up outside the high school on Saturday as friends and family paid tribute to the schoolboy, also known as Tay Meez.

At one point an SUV drove up alongside the mourners and shouted that Brantley died like a gangster because it's what happens when you 'act like a gangster'.

The victim’s great aunt, Twila Oliver, told KTNV: 'He was an amazing kid. He was really funny. He was really popular. He was bright in school. His passion was basketball and he was really good at math.

'Taylor wasn't the target. Taylor just happened to be standing there in the wrong place at the wrong time.'

They are now urging someone in the crowd to come forward and give police information on the suspect.

Last year, a police report obtained by the Review-Journal showed Brantley was questioned in the September 5, 2014, shooting death of Andrea Lafon, 20.

Police said it was a marijuana deal gone wrong. A Mojave student was charged with murder.

Brantley told detectives he had seen the boy, now a 17-year-old senior at Mojave, with a gun when the fatal shot was fired.

His family have set up a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses.
