Piers Morgan made quite an impression during his first full day on Good Morning Britain on Monday - so much so, that his appearance caused him to trend on Twitter.

The 50-year-old, who has guest presented on the show before, appeared to be having a ball as he took to the sofa alongside co-host Susanna Reid.

When the 44-year-old referred to herself as Piers' television wife, he popped his arm around her and joked: 'Do I get any conjugal rights?'

Starring role: It was revealed in October that Piers would become a permanent addition to the GMB team, appearing for three days a week

Sadly he's out of luck as Susanna replied: 'Nope!'

The show saw him engage in an awkward yet entertaining conversation with X Factor reject Mason Noise, after he refused to tell Piers his real name.

On a more serious note, he also interviewed shadow defence secretary Maria Eagle.

Keen to see what the public made of his foray, MailOnline's US editor-at-large was thrilled to discover he was trending on Twitter after the show, writing: 'Still trending? Nice. @GMB.'

And Piers was delighted with tweets written about him - good and bad, even reading some of the less flattering ones out on air.

He wrote after the show: 'Well that was all most amusing. Thanks for the tweets, good & bad. They made me chuckle. @GMB.'

@Tracey_benton1 was shocked to discover she found Piers a little too aesthetically pleasing, writing: 'This man gets more good looking everytime i see him on TV. Is this crush wrong?'

While @ktjwads wrote I think I fancy @piersmorgan am I going to hell?!

‏@jazzamkg added: 'Happy that @piersmorgan is on @GMB - just what the show needed! He's not afraid to say what everyone else is thinking! #piersmorgan.'

But his good friend Gary Lineker joked: 'Woke up this morning to @piersmorgan trending. Assumed he'd lost another job, but no such luck it appears.'

He'll be pleased: Piers received some rather favourable comments on social networking as he trended following his appearance

And Lord Sugar wrote: 'I see you put your teeth back in.'

While @jessica_daviso added: 'Piers Morgan Tonight is the longest a loaf of bread has hosted a TV show.'

Despite dividing public opinion, Piers was widely praised for taking Mason Noise to task.

Morgan, who has moved from a guest presenter role on ITV's landmark breakfast show to a permanent spot, questioned the star over his unique moniker.

'Noise isn't your name, right? Your name isn't Noise?' the 50-year-old probed jovially.

As Noise replied that the nickname was something which had stuck with him since childhood, Morgan continued to press: 'So what is your name?'

Looking uncomfortable, the singer replied: 'You'll have to go and google it.'

Laughing, the new presenter asked further: 'Mason, it's not Question Time, just what's your name?'

'No, it's like asking Batman what his name is,' the former X Factor star responded, which seemingly irked Morgan, who went on to question whether the aspiring singer had his ego in check.

'Like asking Batman what his name is! Mason, is this the problem? I was watching you, I loved you sticking it to Simon [Cowell] obviously, but when you liken yourself to Batman, a superhero saving the world, do you think the ego is riding tricks that the body maybe isn't quite able to cash?' he asked.

The awkward exchange continued on Twitter when Morgan later tweeted the singer: 'Good to meet you Batman @itsmasonnoise. Good luck saving the planet and look out Justin Timberlake!'

Noise - who left The X Factor in a surprise eliminationon on Saturday night - hit back: '@piersmorgan Glad I've finally met someone with a matching ego (batman voice).'

As Morgan noted with glee after his first stint finished, his name was trending on Twitter all morning.

'Piers was trending for most of the morning, which I quite like, sounds a bit like Oprah, one name, Cher. But I'm a little bit peeved by some of the tone of some of these tweets. Show a bit more respect - I'm not ugly,' he joked.

After the show, the Life Stories presenter added: 'Well that was all most amusing. Thanks for the tweets, good & bad. They made me chuckle.'

Morgan was revealed to be taking on a permanent role on Good Morning Britain back in mid-October, after impressing the show's producers earlier this year when he filled in for Ben Shepherd's holiday leave.

He will take to the sofa in front of an audience of millions alongside the regular hosts three times a week.

Of his new role, Morgan previously joked: 'I am very excited at the prospect of waking up at 3am every morning, and even more excited by the thought of how annoying Susanna is going to find me after a few months.

'Good Morning Britain is a great show with a terrific team on and off screen. I’m looking forward to it enormously.'

Managing Director of Daytime, ITV Studios, Emma Gormley said: 'We're proud of the strong show we've been building over the last 18 months.

'Audience figures are up some seven per cent year on year. We look forward to continuing that growth with Piers as part of the team.'

ITV Director of Daytime, Helen Warner added: 'We loved having Piers on the show earlier this year, so we're delighted that he's joining us permanently.

'He is an excellent interviewer and a great broadcaster, who fits in brilliantly with GMB's family of presenters.'

As well as his presenting gig, the TV star and writer recently signed a new two-year contract with MailOnline.
