Bindi Irwin reduces Dancing With The Stars audience to tears as she breaks down during emotional performance in memory of her late father Steve

There was hardly a dry eye in the Dancing With The Stars arena on Monday night after frontrunner Bindi Irwin took to the stage for a heartfelt tribute dance.

The Australian teenager couldn't keep her composure and fell sobbing into the arms of her partner Derek Hough, after a childhood image of herself with her late father Steve flashed up at the end of her sequence.

The judging panel and studio audience members were visibly moved by the outpouring of emotion and many were seen wiping their eyes.

Bindi's mother Terri, who was watching from the crowd, was also deeply touched.

The competition favourite later confessed she wasn't aware that the image would be shown and the emotional surprise left her barely able to speak.

With her head buried in her partner's shoulder, she could be heard saying: 'I love you, thank you' to Derek while choking back tears.

Breaking the silence that ensued, judge Carrie Ann said: 'That was brilliant and a dancer's freestyle. You are far from ordinary, thank you to your mom and dad for creating you because this has been such a joy to experience you every week.'

Given her chance to reply, Bindi could hardly suppress her emotion as she explained what it had meant to see that photo unexpectedly appear.

'I didn't know that photo was going to be up, so for me this whole experience has meant the world for my whole family and it has changed my life, so thank you so much,' she said.

Before her live performance, the 17-year-old told cameras that while rehearsing she felt as though there was a third person choreographed into the dance alongside herself and Derek.

'I do feel as if dad is still with me everyday,' she told her partner during one such session that also saw both of them break down in tears, 'I have tried to just remember his strength knowing that dad is kind of still with me.'

She went on to camera: 'I never really talked about everything I felt when dad passed away.

'I never thought I would revisit that. But to have Derek there to say "It's okay, I am there for you" was something that I was so grateful for.'

With the competition entering its final stages, the young television personality also explained that  she's 'given it everything I have got.'

To prove her point, Bindi lifted up the side of her top to reveal her bruised and battered midsection.

'You can see the bruises on the outside, and the inside of me is kind of the same.'
