It is said male actors often lie about their height by adding on an extra couple of inches to give their stature a boost.

And it appears directors are in on the trick too after cinema legend Martin Scorsese was dwarfed by actress Olivia Wilde at a New York screening of Meadowland on Monday, despite the fact she is only officially a few inches taller.

Even the boost given by the tallest of stilletos seemed unlikely to give the saucy 5ft 7in starlet the near one foot advantage she held over the pint sized moviemaker, who claims to be 5ft 4in.

However it seems he is a big fan of the relatively statuseque actress, as the Color Of Money filmmaker was hosting the event, even though the film was directed by Reed Morano.

And it was easy to see why the towering giant of cinema looked like an excited schoolboy as he stood next to Olivia, even is she left him looking decidedly fun-sized.

For the 31-year-old looked in fine form indeed in an extremely revealing blouse, which boasted a massive split that exposed her navel and cleavage.

The OC favourite rounded of her ensemble with a pair of black flared trousers, though it was her wavy luxurious brown locks that really allowed her to pull off her challenging fashion mode.

Olivia, who famously changed her surname from Cockburn in honour of flamboyant Irish writer Oscar Wilde, was certainly pleased to be gracing the pre-show red carpet with such talented people.

For she posted on social media: 'Proudest moment of my professional life. My two favorite directors, Martin Scorsese and @reedmorano, at a screening of @meadowlandfilm, hosted by Marty himself.

'I can retire now. Bye, I'll just be on the beach selling beer now.'

Her proclamation, which is sure to excite locals in the Venice and Santa Monica areas of Los Angeles County, did not quite do justice to the veritable galaxy of stars who had turned out to see the film however.

For comedy king Chris Rock, who stands at a serviceable 5ft 10in was also there, and looked around the same height as Olivia in her heels while wearing flat shoes.

In addition 80s icon Kathleen Turner, saucy Welsh Gotham favourite Erin Richards and direct-to-DVD classic The Marine 3: Homefront star Ashley Bell added an extra splash of glamour to the event.

The film, which also stars Luke Wilson. tells the story of how a couple deal with their son's disappearance at a gas station.

Luke's cop character attempts a more traditional form of healing, but loses his values, while Olivia's ends up in increasingly dangerous situations as she tries to find acceptance.
