A controversial Christian pastor has claimed that the Bataclan massacre in Paris was a 'message from God' - because the 89 rock fans who were slaughtered by terrorists were 'devil worshippers'.

Speaking on his radio show, Kevin Swanson, who recently hosted a conference in Iowa attended by three Republican presidential candidates, remarked that France had just experienced 'its 9/11'.

He noted that the California rock band Eagles Of Death Metal had been playing the song, 'Kiss The Devil', when gunmen opened fire on innocent attendees inside the concert hall on November 13.

'It's a warning... there’s certainly a providential irony here,' the anti-gay, right-wing pastor said on Generations Radio. 'They went from singing about the devil to meeting the devil face-to-face.'

He added: 'I think we need to ask the concertgoers, at least those who survived, did you love the devil? Did you love the devil’s works as your friends were being shot up in the massacre?

'I'm deadly serious. You were dancing to this worship service... to the devil. The devil came in, the devil did what the devil does best. He killed, he massacred, he destroyed...

Swanson went on to accuse both the concertgoers and the Islamic State - which has claimed responsibility for the atrocity - of being 'sinners' who were 'practising the works of the devil'.

He added that the EODM band members - none of whom was harmed - were the devil's 'prophets'.

But he said he was not on the side of ISIS, nor the side of the victims, the Daily Beast reports.

'I'm not taking the side of the devil-worshippers performing the concert; I'm not on the side of ISIS who are slaughtering the demon-worshippers in the concert. I’m not on either side,' he said.

Swanson said it was 'interesting' that the devil had taken both sides - and 'shot them both up'.

However, he then described the mass shooting as a 'terrible, terrible event'.

While 89 people died in the Bataclan massacre, a further 41 victims were murdered in other shootings and suicide bombings across the French capital on the same night.

Two weeks before the atrocities, Swanson had hosted the 'Freedom 2015: National Religious Liberties Conference', attended by candidates Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee, and Bobby Jindal.

The pastor is known for being outspoken against homosexuality - and believes that God is angry with America for permitting same-sex couples to marry, according to the Daily Beast.

'I think we all need to pay attention to what’s happening,' the pastor at the Reformation Church of Elizabeth in Colorado said of the Paris attacks. 'This is a message from God.'

Swanson has previously said that homosexuals should be sentenced to death, it is reported.

And during his recent conference, he blamed parents for allowing their children to read 'homosexual' Harry Potter books, ranting about the fact that Harry's mentor, Dumbledore, was gay.

He also hit out at the 'homosexual' character Hiccup from the film How to Train Your Dragon.

In shocking footage obtained by the group rightwingwatch.org, Swanson ranted: 'America repent on Harry Potter. America repent on How to Train Your Dragon.

'Repent that Dumbledore emerged as a homosexual mentor for Harry Potter.

'Children are raised to be stumbled by the Dumbledores and Hiccups on How to Train Your Dragon.

'My friends, America needs to repent. For tens of millions of parents it would be better that a millstone be hung around their neck and they be drowned at the bottom of the sea.'

Last year, Swanson denounced Disney's Frozen as a tool for 'indoctrinating' girls into lesbianism.
