Furious Cheryl Fernandez-Versini takes legal action after picture of her near what appears to be a 'white substance' at fashion awards emerges online

Cheryl Fernandez-Versini is taking legal action after a fashion journalist posted a picture online of her in the presence of what appears to be a white substance.

The image of the X Factor judge, 32, was taken on Monday evening - and subsequently deleted - in the bathroom at the London Coliseum, where she was one of the many star guests at the British Fashion Awards.

Shot in the reflection of the mirror, the singer appears to be washing her hands, but in front of her and slightly to the side are what seem to be three lines of a substance.

The photograph was shared on Instagram by a fashion journalist at the awards ceremony, along with the caption: 'Sadness in her eyes.'

The picture was swiftly removed from the writer's timeline.

There is no reason for to assume what looked like a white substance belonged to Cheryl, or that she was involved in drug-taking in any way.

She was entirely unaware of whatever appeared to be on the counter, nor was it clear what is was.

The star has now begun legal action to stop the photograph in question from circulating.

A legal notice has been sent around to prohibit the publication of the photograph, directly from Cheryl's lawyers.

A source close to the star told The Sun: 'It's outrageous that someone in the fashion industry has taken a picture of Cheryl like this and posted it publicly.

'She absolutely despises drugs and any connection linking her to them is ridiculous. She was just using the toilet.'

On Tuesday, hours after the image emerged and was deleted, she stepped out for an appearance on BBC Radio 1, putting on a brave face.

The young man had been just 21 when he died from a heroin overdose, and Cheryl - a friend of his from school in Newcastle - had spent time begging and pleading with him to kick the habit.

Cheryl also famously laid into the likes of Pete Doherty and Kate Moss who, during their time together as a couple in the mid-noughties, were often linked with drug abuse.

'The nightmare devastated all John's family. Seeing him in a coffin was terrible. And to see pictures of [Pete] Doherty glamorising the habit, and with Kate Moss on his arm, too. It makes me sick,' she said.

'There were lots of users in my area,' she confessed. 'Heroin was there for the taking, I could easily have taken that route if I'd wanted to. But I always maintained my ambition and I'm proud of myself.'
