'My love of surfing outweighs that fear:' Chris Hemsworth admits he's not afraid to swim with Australia's sharks as he promotes movie 'In the Heart of the Sea'

The Hemsworth brothers are known for their love of surfing. 

And it looks like even the ever present danger of shark attacks isn't enough to deter Chris Hemsworth from catching some waves, with the Thor hunk admitting his love of surfing overrides his common sense.

'My beach where we lived, directly out the front, someone got bit six to eight months ago,' the 32-year-old confessed on The Project.

'My love and obsession for surfing some days outweighs that kind of fear,' he continued. 

'It's probably naivety or stupidity on my part,' he laughed.

Although shark attacks aren't that common, there has been two shark-related fatalities in Australia this year. 

A 41-year-old man was killed at Ballina's Shelly Beach in February, while a 46-year-old Tasmanian man was mauled by a great white in July.

When he isn't in America for work, the Aussie actor lives in a $7 million Balinese-style home near Byron Bay with his wife Elsa Pataky and their three children. 

He's currently promoting the release of his new ocean thriller, In the Heart of the Sea.

The film, directed by Oscar winner Ron Howard, tells the story of a whaling ship preyed upon by a sperm whale.

The movie is inspired by Moby Dick and opens in December.
