The main tip is for Black Friday shoppers from Google is to go to stores in the morning, with foot traffic peaking between the times of 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM, and to avoid buying electronics, which are the most popular items
1.) Plan to shop in the morning, late afternoon or evening.
Google says that store traffic peaks on Black Friday between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. This is not to say the mornings will not be busy and filled with lines, but this is said to be the busiest period of the day.
'Shop in the morning to avoid peak afternoon hours': Black Friday store traffic peaks in the afternoon for most stores, typically between 2 p.m. to 4 p.m
2.) Don't buy a cellphone or electronics
According to Google, 'there are many stores that don't see their biggest store traffic spikes on Black Friday weekend,' instead getting that spike on the Saturday before Christmas.
However this does not include electronics store, which are twice as busy on Black Friday than normal weekends during the holiday season.
Traffic to cellphone stores is 1.6 times as high on Black Friday.
Shopping malls, discount stores, superstores and department stores have the highest foot traffic on the Saturday before Christmas, while dollar stores have the most foot traffic from last-minute shoppers on Christmas Eve.
'Many stores are actually less busy on Black Friday than other days closer to Christmas,' Google said, as demonstrated in this graph
3.) Check you can get what you want
If shopping with purpose, always check a store has an item in stock before attempting to tackle the crowds, Google says.
Many stores show in-store availability on their websites and Google also shows product availability for nearby stores.
Mobile searches per user are 11% higher in electronics stores and 8% higher in department stores on Black Friday compared with other weekends during the holiday season, Google says.
