'Don't zoom in': 5 Seconds of Summer apologise for the 'mangina in the pyjama pants' before accepting the ARIA for Best Live Act from Joel and Benji Madden

While everyone else put on their Thursday best to attend the 29th ARIA Awards, 5 Seconds Of Summer were in their pyjamas.

They could be forgiven, though, as the pop stars weren't at The Star in Sydney where the ceremony was taking place, but in Los Angeles

NovaFM's Fitzy and Wippa conducted a slightly awkward interview with the youngsters, who were slumped on the sofa and dressed in their sleepwear.

'Look how comfortable I am,' said guitarist Michael Clifford, 20.

When the hosts asked them: 'What do you want to say to your fans? Guys, they are watching right now, screaming.'

Ashton Irwin, 21, responded: 'Please excuse the mangina in the pyjama pants.'

Left a little speechless by the response, Wippa stood in silence with his dropped jaw as the presenters swiftly wrapped up the interview shortly after.

Fitzy joked: 'And we’re gonna throw to Axel Whitehead later on as well,' making reference to the 2006 ARIAs where the former Australian Idol contestant had a 'wardrobe malfunction' on stage.

Later, the band appeared in regular clothes to accept the award for Best Live Act.

Good Charlotte's Benji and Joel Madden walked onto camera to present the group with a crudely constructed award, saying: 'I have a home-made ARIA Award for you guys.'

The Sydney-based band were quick to acknowledge their roots, saying: 'We started out at the Annandale Hotel and recently, 25 minutes from home, we played there.

'We're from western Sydney and now we're in Los Angeles and get to tour the world and get to see beautiful fans every day of our lives and that's our total existence.'

The award is the band's second ARIA, having won Best Song for She Looks So Perfect in 2014.

They were again nominated for Best Group, which they lost out to Perth psych-rockers Tame Impala.
