Marrying a complete stranger chosen by a team of relationship experts is a concept made famous by the controversial reality series Married at First Sight, however, after last season's three failed marriages, two of the shows newest stars have revealed the real reasons they signed up for the risky social experiment.

David Norton, 29, and Vanessa Nelson, 27, both from Atlanta, are two of six people who agreed to say 'I do' to a stranger on tonight's season three premiere of Married at First Sight, and both of them believe that they had exhausted all of their dating option before signing up for the show.

'I really tried everything under the sun,' David told Daily Mail Online. 'What I was doing wasn't working, so I said: "Let's do this. Let's marry a stranger."'

David, who is a self-described 'serial monogamist', said he has tried dating apps and website and gone out with co-workers and friends of friends, however, he has been unable to find his match.

'We live in a society now where everything is instantaneous,' he said of online dating. 'You can have a fantastic date and then you go home and you have six new matches.'

'When are you really focused on a relationship and not looking for whatever else is out there?' he asked.

The software accounts executive explained that he thought he had found the one and was actually planning on proposing to his now-ex-girlfriend when he said she blindsided him and 'picked a fight' before breaking up with him.

After their breakup, he found himself staying with women who weren't right for him much longer than he should have.

'I wanted a relationship so badly I was dating all the wrong people,' he admitted.

Meanwhile, Vanessa, a corporate events manager, signed up for the show when she was only 26 years old because she said she is ready for that step in her life. After her four-year relationship ended, she found herself single for two years and also felt that modern dating wasn't working for her.

Before being chosen for the show, Vanessa and David went through the grueling application process, which requires numerous personal assessments and interviews with the shows experts, sociologist Dr. Pepper Schwartz, sexologist Dr. Logan Levkoff, humanist Greg Epstein, and psychologist Dr. Joseph Cilona.

'I don't have any crazy dating stories, like horror stories, but I did have a guy take me to Whole Foods on a date,' Vanessa told Daily Mail Online. 'Why did you want to go to Whole Foods? It was so weird. Needless to say we didn't date after that.'

And when it comes to terrible first dates, David said he once had a woman steal $100 out of his wallet.

'She denied it for the longest time,' he said. 'Eventually, she came clean and admitted that she stole it because she needed a cab ride home.'

While two out of three couples from the first season of Married at First are still married, last season's pairings were disastrous.

Not only did all three couples get divorced, Jessica Castro, 30, ended up filing for a restraining order against her husband Ryan De Nino, 29, after claiming he had threatened her life and that of her family.

When asked why they think their pairings will be any different, David stressed that 'everyone's story is so different' that there will never be the same two outcomes. He noted that is strategy is focus on his own story and put 'the blinder on' instead of comparing his relationship to ones on past seasons.

'I went into this knowing it may not work, so my thought process was give 120 per cent this entire process,' he explained. 'I didn't want to have to wonder what if. 'I can honestly say that I did that.'

You're doing what? After David (left) broke the news to his friends, he was surprised that they weren't more supportive

Meanwhile, Vanessa said she appreciated how invested the shows experts were in finding her a match and helping her cultivate her relationship with her spouse.

'I think in any relationship there is risk in marriage and there is a possibility for it to turn crazy and unpredictable,' she said.

And unlike some of the show's previous participants, Vanessa and David said they weren't overly concerned that they wouldn't be physically attracted to their spouses.

David said that he dropped his expectations so he could focus on the issues that really matter.

'I was expecting and preparing for her to be the troll that lives under the bridge, so I couldn't be disappointed,' he explained.

However, David admitted that their was a fear that his wife wouldn't be impressed by his own looks.

'It is one thing to be rejected when someone rejects you on a Tinder message, but it is another when your wife doesn't find you attractive,' he explained.

Unlike David, Vanessa said she had some expectations, but she knows that attraction can grow because it has happened to her.

'I have had some bad experiences dating short guys and I didn't want to be paired with someone short,' she said of one of the physical concerns she shared with the experts.

Vanessa noted that she is nearsighted and wears glasses, so she could barely see her future husband when she walked down the aisle.

'I couldn't really make him out until I got close,' she said with a laugh.

Both Vanessa and David find the grueling assessment process and arranged marriages to be logical - and romantic.

While David said he viewed the show as an opportunity that he could make work, he noted that the romantic side of him thinks that maybe he had so many failed relationships because it led him to the point where he would marry a stranger and meet his wife.

'I am just hopeless romantic,' Vanessa admitted. 'I wear my heart on my sleeve. I believe in those happy ending love stories, and in my mind I was like, "this is meant to be", but so much goes into the assessment.'

From the couples' wedding days to their honeymoons to their first few weeks of marriage, David hinted that fans should 'expect the unexpected' this season.

And while most people would agree that it is crazy to marry a stranger, Vanessa noted: 'When you are taking a chance at love, it is always crazy.'
