- But some fans accused her of not understanding plight of refugees
- Cher defended her comments, saying she wants to take in a refugee family
Cher has been attacked on social media after posting a rant on Twitter about ISIS and praising US visa reforms before saying she wants to take in a refugee family.
The singer had intended to tweet her support for changes to the U.S. visa waiver program which were announced yesterday.
They were confirmed in the wake of the Paris terror attacks, and the new measures include the Department of Homeland Security collecting more information about travellers' past visits to countries such as Syria and Iraq.
Singer Cher (pitured earlier this year) provoked outrage on social media when she posted a rant on Twitter about ISIS and praised US visa reforms
Wanting to show her support for the new measures, Cher took to Twitter, where she also called for ISIS members to stay in the Middle East in a tweet filled with emojis.
She posted: 'Visa waiver not safe for America, we are at war with people who want to come to America; kill American's (sic), why make it easy?! Also, if people go to Isis to knife, bomb (kill) let them stay with Isis.'
However, the tweet prompted a backlash among fans who accused of her of not understanding the plight of refugees trying to flee conflict in countries such as Syria.
Sheila Brown wrote: 'Disappointed in you for that tweet Cher. You're better than that. Beginning to sound like Trump and Carson.'
In the tweet she wrote: 'Visa waiver not safe for America, we are at war with people who want to come to America; kill American's, why make it easy?!'
While Xmas Gifts Gavin said: 'Desperate people need our aid. Please reconsider this stance. You can help innocent people fleeing from terrible violence.'
Ani Wandaryan posted: 'You're misinformed, Cher. Ask Armenians about #Syrianrefugees (many are such themselves). For the first time, you are sounding old.'
And Dave Nutall said: 'I'm British and I took advantage of the visa waiver to come to Vegas to see your show. Bet you don't queue to get a visa for the UK.'
But fans took to Twitter saying that she didn't understand the plight of refugees fleeing from Syria
But the singer hit back at the critics, saying the visa waiver scheme doesn't vet people entering the US and that she would love to take in a refugee family.
She posted: 'DUMB Tried2 stretch 140 too Far.Our vetting system protects us.Offered 2Take Family in2 my home, still want2.But Visa waiver doesnt VET ANY1.
'If u don't Like/Trust,feel Ive stood 4 downtrodden,u will C what u want,in my words.Too many I Fear,tried 2save words.Shame,I feel 4 All.'
Under new plans by the Department for Homeland Security, they would also ask Congress for additional powers, including the authority to increase fines for air carriers that fail to verify passport data, and the ability to require all travelers to use passports with embedded security chips.
Cher tried to defend herself and the tightening of visa rules and even said she had offered to take in a refugee family
After the Paris attacks, the House passed a bill that would bar refugees from Syria and Iraq from entering the United States until security officials certify that they are not threats.
The bill would cripple Obama's plan to accept 10,000 refugees in the next year and he has vowed to veto it.
Officials have acknowledged that a European traveling to Syria to train with a group like ISIS might be able to later enter the United States without significant scrutiny, if they are not already known to U.S. intelligence or partners such as Britain's domestic intelligence agency MI5 or France's DGSI.
