A Christian author who robbed an Alabama movie theater at gunpoint on Monday reportedly told police he only committed the crime in order to to earn a higher degree as a Freemason.

Britton Clayton Traylor, 33, was wearing a life-like latex mask and armed with a BB gun when he allegedly burst into the Carmike Lee Branch movie theater in Hoover at 11.50 a.m.

He ordered the assistant manager to open the safe and remove a sum of money, which he put into a backpack and left the building through the front door.

However the employee, suspecting the gun was fake, followed Traylor and tackled him.

The man managed to disarm Traylor and also ripped off his mask.

Officers arrived at the scene to find the employee and a passerby holding Traylor to the ground.

Police say Traylor drove to the theater in his 911 Porsche Carrera and told them he hoped the robbery would further his rise within the Freemasons.

'It appears he thought he had this crime well planned,'' Hoover police spokesman Captain Gregg Rector told AL.com.

'He had an additional disguise, a wig, in his getaway car, which happened to be a Porsche 911 Carrera.'

Capt Rector continued: 'He obviously got a little more than he bargained for though, when the manager decided he didn't want to be a victim.'

However police aren't convinced by Traylor's motive.

'We're not really buying that as we've never heard of Masons instructing members to commit criminal acts,'' Captain Rector said.

'It's really one of the most ridiculous excuses that we've heard lately. He may have achieved a higher level of stupidity, but that's about it.'

Traylor was charged with first-degree robbery and is being held on a $60,000 bond.

Traylor was also arrested for theft last year at a Walmart.

Police said there was a clear lesson in the incident, other than laying.

'We're fortunate, however, this incident had a good ending, but it certainly could have gone bad in so many ways,' Captain Rector said.

'While we don't recommend tackling armed robbers, our victim, the good guy, certainly came out on top and manhandled the bad guy.'

Traylor's 2012 book, Shining the Light: Exposing the Truth, is an expose of 'Luciferian agenda'.

He wrote about the book: 'There are those amongst us who are actually serving a much darker power, while purporting to be messengers of light and hope. You will learn of some of the movements that have been shaping world politics and economics, and shifts in world religious thought. The influence of powerful occultists and dynasties of families can be traced back to very frightening origins.'

He claims the book to be a New York Times bestseller.

According to his Amazon biography, Traylor lives in Birmingham, Alabama, and studied political science at the University of Alabama.

'After leaving school, he has pursued several entrepreneurial ventures, especially ecommerce websites,' the biography says.

'This has given him the time and freedom to pursue his true passion for writing.'
