According to the report, Sly is on board as executive producer, but has not yet committed to donning the red bandanna again himself.

The US Special Armed Forces soldier has starred in four films to date, starting with First Blood back in 1982, and most recently in the 2008 sequel simply titled Rambo.

A fifth film - Last Blood - had been mooted even while part four was still in cinemas, but has since been shelved.

The character of John Rambo's son, JR, a former Navy SEAL, is new and was never mentioned in any of the previous films.

Rambo senior will still be a central character in the film, but there is now word on who would play him yet.

The news comes two years after Entertainment One and Millennium Films signed a deal to develop and co-produce a TV series based on the Rambo property. The companies wanted Stallone involved on both sides of the camera, but his rep at the time said he did not want to reprise the role.

The film is just the latest in a recent rush of Fox movies being given TV treatment. According to THR, the studio is also planning a limited series based on another of Stallone's mega-selling franchises, The Expendables, as well as series based on Lethal Weapon and Behind Enemy Lines.

NBC are following suit with Liam Neeson's Taken, as are CBS with Training Day and ABC with MY Best Friend's Wedding.

Meanwhile the seventh installment of Stallone's Rocky series Creed continues to knock critics out at the box office.
