The toddler with a ball of METAL in his stomach: Doctors remove 29 magnets, a battery and a coin from 3-year-old's gut
- Indian boy had stomach pain for months but doctors prescribed painkillers
- Finally, an X-ray revealed a huge clump of metal objects in his stomach
- Boy had been eating metal from his family's jewellery box business
- Doctors removed magnets which had stuck together and damaged his gut
A three-year-old boy had a huge ball of metal objects stuck in his stomach, causing him severe pain.
The boy, from Mathura, in Uttar Pradesh, northern India, was found to have 29 magnets, a battery and a coin in his gut after swallowing objects lying around his house.
He had been suffering from stomach pain for months but was sent home with painkillers every time his parents took him to see doctors.
Eventually the toddler was admitted to the Metro Hospital, in Faridabad, outside New Delhi, last month where he had his first X-ray.
Doctors were shocked when the scan revealed the giant clump of metal objects in his stomach.
Doctors in India have removed 29 magnets, a battery and a coin from a three-year-old boy's stomach after he had swallowed objects lying around his home
The magnets had all stuck together and had created a huge ball, causing the boy severe pain and damaging his insides, doctors said. Pictured is an X-ray of the metal in his gut
Dr Brahm Datt Pathak, Head of Laparoscopic Surgery, at Metro Hospital, Faridabad, rushed the toddler into theatre on November 20 where he was amazed at loot he uncovered.
‘There were 29 magnets in total, very unusual,’ he said.
‘It seems he’d been swallowing these objects for over a year. I would even say it had become a habit for him.’
The magnets had all stuck together and had created a huge ball, causing the boy severe pain and damaging his insides.
‘It was an extremely complicated case,’ he added. ‘The baby’s gut was completely damaged due to the amount of magnets in his stomach.
'Surgery lasted for more than three hours and my team and I felt we were just pulling more and more metal out his little stomach.’
The doctor explained that the toddler’s family ran a jewellery box making business from their home and many objects were often left scattered across the floor.
It would seem the boy had been helping himself to the leftover materials.
Dr Pathak added: ‘If the pieces had been small enough they would have passed through him naturally in his excretion process, but these objects were just too large and his case needed special attention.
'I’m sure the boy had been in pain for a long time, it’s sad his condition had not been picked up sooner.’

The boy was in hospital for a few days before he was finally discharged.
He's now back at home where the family are taking much more care of where they leave their working materials.
The news comes after MailOnline reported on the story of Rajpal Singh, 34, who had swallowed hundreds of coins and nails.
Over a three year period Mr Singh, a farmer from Bathinda in India's western state of Punjab, had swallowed 140 coins, 150 nails and a handful of nuts, bolts and batteries.
He had also gulped down screws, nails and magnets.
Mr Singh said his bizarre habit began after he fell into a depression, and eating metal objects brought him comfort.
He underwent more than 240 endoscopy procedures to remove the objects.
Additionally, he underwent two operations to remove the metal - one of which was nine hours long.
