Since making it in Hollywood he's spent much of his time in the United States but that hasn't made Joel Edgerton forget his Australian roots.

Down Under for the premiere of his latest film Black Mass, the actor was seen enjoying some downtime in the waters of Sydney's famous Bondi beach.

Hitting the surf on Tuesday, the 41-year-old displayed no small amount of skill as he was seen slicing through the waves.

Joel was with friend and fellow actor Damian Walshe-Howling - who stars in ABC1 legal drama Janet King - and despite it being the first day of summer, both were clad in wetsuits.

The pair have previously been sighted surfing together and are by no means alone in their love of the ocean.

The Mentalist's Simon Baker and Hemsworth brothers Chris and Liam are also often spotted on the back of a board while in Australia.

Looking relaxed, Great Gatsby star Joel went unshaven and was still sporting his peroxide blond buzzcut, a look from his latest venture The Lovings, directed by Jeff Nichols.

The actor recently revealed that in his early career he wasn't deemed attractive enough to star in the heavily beach-centric Australian soaps.

Speaking to the UK's Telegraph he said: 'I just wasn't that pretty, to be honest! They didn't want me on a surfboard'.

'And back then I was a little bit judgemental about the soapy stuff. I was working happily in the theatre, but I was losing the occasional really cool job to actors who'd been in those shows, because they sold tickets and I didn't.'

Graduates from local soap opera Home And Away include fellow surfers Chris Hemsworth and Simon Baker as well as the late Heath Ledger.

While Neighbours boasts the likes of Kylie Minogue and Russell Crowe as their former alums.
