Paul Ince believes his former Manchester United and England team-mate Gary Neville has the leadership qualities to succeed at Valencia and he wants to see more ex-players in management.

Neville left his role as a Sky Sports analyst to take up a role with Valencia until the end of the season.

Ince also took up a career in management once his playing days were finished, and he thinks the FA and LMA could do more to help former players take that career path.

Speaking to Sportsmail on behalf of 888poker.com, Ince said: ‘The problem we have at the moment in this country with the LMA, Premier League and the FA is we don't look after our own and we seem to have a situation where clubs are bringing in all these foreign managers.

‘There are some top players who leave the game like Rio Ferdinand or Steven Gerrard who might want to go into management but might feel there's not the longevity in that.

‘When you've finished playing football you either put yourself away from football or go into management or punditry and what Sky and BT have done is that they're using the likes of Jamie Carragher and Ferdinand and the knowledge they have learned in the game on TV.

‘I would rather see them do that as a manager but in England, ex-English players don't seem to get a chance.’

Neville was unveiled by Spanish side Valencia on Thursday and Ince thinks it is a brave move for him to leave Sky Sports and manage in another country.

‘I played with Gary Neville, and he was a fantastic right back - probably the best I've played with,’ Ince said.

‘He loves football and has got a vast knowledge of football. He is a leader and doesn't stop talking about football which is great.

‘It is always difficult to go abroad. I did that with Inter Milan and it took me three or four months to settle down but it's great he's got the bravery and courage to do it.

‘He could have stayed at Sky Sports for another two or three years but he has been given an opportunity to manage probably the third biggest club in Spain.

‘It's not going to be easy. It's tough and he must start well but I believe he has got the leadership qualities and knowledge and they need to give him a chance and I wish him all the best.’
