Mike Myers crashes the SNL stage during host Ryan Gosling's opening monologue... 20 years after departing the show's cast

Saturday Night Live viewers were in for quite the surprise during this week's episode, as one of the show's biggest legends, Mike Myers, crashed the stage.

The comedy great, who departed as an SNL cast-member 20 years ago - crashed the stage during host Ryan Gosling's opening monologue.

Gosling had started it by pretending he was 'so excited to be back home' in New York City, saying: 'It brings back all these great memories of growing up as a kid.'

But he was soon reminded that he was actually Canadian, finally admitting: 'Not everybody's a fan of immigrants right now, y'know? Not sure I want to be shouting to from the rafters.'

At that point, fellow Canadian Myers walked out wearing a Toronto Maple Leafs shirt, telling Gosling: 'I'll take it from here.'

And when Gosling pretended to be shocked and asking where the comedian came from, Myers joked: 'I live backstage.'

Myers then asked if the actor was 'ashamed to be Canadian,' to which Gosling insisted: 'I'm very proud to be Canadian, OK - it's one of the greatest countries in the world, y'know.'

But he then insisted that 'nobody really wants a dramatic actor from Canada,' joking that people 'just think of it as America's hat.'

Myers then pointed out that they have 'so much to be proud of' including 'our hunky new Prime Minister, Trudeau,' 'Degrassi Junior High' and 'Sir Justin Bieber.'

They were even joined by the Bonhomme de Neige as Myers insisted: 'Nobody does Christmas better than Canada.'

'You're right, OK. I shouldn't have lied. I'm sorry,' Gosling said, with Myers forcing him to change his accent to sound more Canadian.

After joining forces with the hunk for the monologue, Myers returned at the end of the show to bid farewell to the audience.

The Austin Powers star started out his career on the comedy sketch show, and was a featured performer from 1989 to 1995.

He came back as a host in 1997, and then appeared as his Wayne's World character during a 2011 episode hosted by Dana Carvey, and again as part of the 40th Anniversary Special, SNL 40, earlier this year.

Myers also returned to the show in December last year, to mock the Sony hack while in character as Austin Powers villain Dr. Evil. The episode was hosted by Amy Adams.
