'I didn't think anyone would come in!' Ed Sheeran performs songs for $2 in a dingy peep show prank organised by Hamish Blake and Andy Lee

If a shady-looking spruiker approached you in the street and told you Ed Sheeran was waiting to perform for you privately for $2, you'd be forgiven if you thought they were lying.

But that's exactly what radio pranksters Hamish Blake and Andy Lee did in Melbourne on Friday.

With Hamish, 33, in costume as the shady spruiker, the hosts of Fox FM's drive show set up a 'peep show' with the British pop star, but it took them over two hours to find any trusting pedestrians.

Dressed in a fake beard, a trucker cap and a flannelette shirt, the unrecognisable comedian made kissing sounds and approached passers-by with lines such as: 'You wanna peep at Ed Sheeran for two bucks?'

The affable Ed had his doubts the prank would even work, saying: 'I wouldn't come in,' he said, noting Hamish's seedy outfit.

'It's going to be a brave soul,' said Andy, asking then if they were pricing the 30 second-long gig too high.

Looking up from his phone, the 24-year-old joked: 'I think $2 is pretty fair,' considering tickets to his Australian shows have been priced at around the $100 mark.

After two hours, and after thinking this might have been 'a giant waste of everyone's time', Hamish finally found a pair of people willing to check it out, but not without some initial hesitation.

'You're lying,' smiled the girl when Hamish told her how much it would cost them, and they walked off.

Hamish quite literally had to chase them down the street, finally convincing them to return, and when the red curtains opened to reveal Ed sitting on a stool, the couple couldn't believe it.

'I love you,' the girl told Hamish as they exited.

Another man willing to take the plunge even provided a harmony as Ed sang a snippet of Thinking Out Loud.

One man sat there in obvious bewilderment, with one hand on his hip and his mouth hanging open.

As he left, he said: 'Best f****** $2 I've ever spent.'
