The first model to appear on the cover was Marilyn Monroe in December 1953, and the first centerfold was published in 1956 with actress Marian Stafford.

Garett, who will have a 12-page spread in the special January/February 2016 issue on sale next week, believes it could change her life.

'I was so proud to do Playboy,' she told the New York Daily News. 'This is history.'

'It's such a big deal. It's so iconic. Being the last nude Playmate makes me cry and feel happy inside.'

Playboy calls Garett, a 26-year-old Republic of Georgia native who can speak six languages, one of the more 'worldly' models to appear in its pages.

Garret now hopes to live in Los Angeles, and said she was influenced to pose for Playboy as part of her desire to settle in the USA.

'Playboy has a classic American story,' she said in an interview with Playboy.com. 'And I want to be a part of it.'

'The lifestyle here, where you're free to express yourself, is my type of life. I am proud of the woman I am and have always dreamed of being talked about because of that.'

Playboy editorial director Jason Buhrmester said Garett represents Playboy's evolution over the last 60 years.

'She's international, she's a model, but she still looks approachable,' he told the New York Daily News.

Buhrmester said when he first heard about the magazine's plans to drop completely nude photos, he thought it was a crazy idea - but now believes it's 'common sense'.

'Sixty-two years ago, Hef set out to really push the boundaries of sexual freedom into the mainstream,' he said.

'Now we're in an era where nudity is more ubiquitous than it ever was.'

Playboy Enterprises CEO Scott Flanders told the New York Times that the naked pictures had become 'just passé at this juncture.'

'You're now one click away from every sex act imaginable for free,' he said.

And although she may be it's last naked centerfold, Garett believes the magazine is making the right choice.

'After more than 60 years, of course they know what they're doing,' she said. 'Even if the models are not nude anymore, they're still sexy.'

Playboy said the magazine, which published its first nude centerfold in 1953, will still feature pictures of models in 'provocative poses' in issues that will be larger in size and on higher quality paper.

The announcement of Miss February 2016 came just days after Pamela Anderson revealed she would appear on the issue's final nude cover.

The former Baywatch star said she only agreed to Hefner's request after her teenage sons gave her the go-ahead.

Anderson said her sons had been teased for 'years' over her Playboy covers and 'had a few fist fights over their mom'.

But when the actress asked her 19-year-old son Brandon for permission to do the nude shoot he told her she had to do it and even gave her a high-five in celebration of the news.

'We're older, we're not embarrassed anymore of you,' he said.

And Anderson's 17-year-old son Dylan was just fine with it too.

'Mom, you know you've done it all,' he told her.

The issue will be Anderson's 14th Playboy cover and will feature a 12-page spread.

'I took off all my clothes, and I rolled down the hill as fast as I can,' she said of the shoot.

'I was just screaming, and hair and boobs were flying, and shoes were going everywhere, and they and Ellen [Von Unwerth] shot it.'

When she informed them of the nudity, Brandon said, 'We're older, we're not embarrassed anymore of you. You know, we think you're great'
