Amber Heard set to appear in court to fight charges of illegally importing her pet dogs Boo and Pistol into Australia - and reveals she is 'looking forward' to clearing her name

  • Heard pleaded not guilty to charges against her relating to the dogs
  • She said she was looking forward to fighting the charges in court
  • She will appear in a Gold Coast court some time in 2016
  • Her husband, Johnny Depp, could potentially appear as a witness

Actor Johnny Depp’s wife Amber Heard says she is looking forward to fighting the charges against her after being accused of illegally bringing their pet dogs into Australia.

Heard, 29, is set to face court on the Gold Coast in 2016 and the Pirates of the Caribbean star could possibly appear as a witness, The Guardian reports.

Heard is charged with breaching Australia's quarantine laws after allegedly failing to declare the entry by private jet of Yorkshire terriers Pistol and Boo.

On Monday, Heard’s lawyers entered not guilty pleas on her behalf.

Heard’s lawyers said that while Depp could appear he did not want to disrupt the court during the upcoming five-day trial.

In a statement she said she would come to Australia to fight the charges, despite being told she did not have to be present.

‘My decision to defend [these] charges, as will become apparent in the appropriate forum of the Court, is not intended to in any way diminish the importance of Australia’s laws.

‘I look forward to attending the hearing of these matters. However as the matters are to be determined by the Court, I will not be making any further statements.’

She has been charged with illegally importing animals into the country and producing a false document.

The first charge carries maximum penalties of 10 year’s imprisonment and a $102,000 fine, and the second, one year in jail and a $10,200 fine.

In the Southport Magistrate’s Court on Monday, her lawyer, Paula Morreau, pushed for a trial early in 2016, saying later dates did not suit the celebrity couple, the Gold Coast Bulletin reported.

Magistrate Joan White said listings for the Southport Magistrate’s Court during that time were full, however, the court could try to accommodate the Depps with help from Brisbane.

‘It’s not something that’s going to happen overnight,’ she said.

‘There’s going to be significant discussion, if not argument with Brisbane, about getting someone to do it before then.’

The matter of the trial has been listed again for Tuesday, according to the Gold Coast Bulletin.
