Never-seen-before clip of Chris Pratt's audition with Dave Bautista for Guardians Of The Galaxy is released as part of Marvel's Phase 2 Collection

Chris Pratt fans are getting a treat after Marvel Cinematic Universe decided to release a never-before-seen early audition by the actor for the role of Peter Quill in Guardians Of The Galaxy.

In the tape first published on Yahoo! Movies, the 36-year-old star is seen performing a scene against a black backdrop with Dave Bautista as Drax where he tries to persuade the Destroyer not to kill Gamora, who is eventually played in the movie by Zoe Saldana.

And it's clearly Pratt's 'everyman' approach that appealed to the studio who cast the Parks And Recreation actor in the 2014 superhero movie and launched his meteoric rise to global stardom.

Guardians director James Gunn wrote about the audition tape in a Facebook post on Friday and how both Pratt and Bautista came to be doing lines together.

'Dave tested first, and I thought he was so great that I had him stick around to read with Chris (who I already thought I was going to cast), because I wanted to see their chemistry together,' Gunn wrote.

'They had auditioned with two different scenes - this is them kind of mixing those scenes up, as well as doing some improv,' he explained.

The audition also marked the very first time that two Guardians acted together, Gunn shared with fans.

'I knew there was a spark of something very special, and it's the reason both Chris and Dave were cast,' he said.

Humor: The funny exchange has Pratt drawing a finger across his throat as a euphemism for killing but Drax doesn't understand what he's doing

Guardians Of The Galaxy grossed a staggering $773.3 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, and Pratt and Bautista will reprise their roles in a sequel set to start production in early 2016.

Since this audition took place, Pratt has become just about the most bankable star in Hollywood, with 2015's Jurassic World - that made more than $1.6 billion globally - cementing his place at the top of the sought-after actors list.

But back when he and the former WWE champion were exchanging lines, Pratt's dream of superstardom was still a long shot.

My pick: Guardians director James Gunn shot the superhero movie in England and back in 2013, shared this photo of himself with a bulkier Chris Pratt whom he cast in the coveted leading role, a decision he had to defend to fans

In fact, when news of his casting was announced, Gunn found himself having to defend the decision to die-hard Marvel comics fans.

'In an Chris Pratt auditioned against A-list big-time movie stars for the most desired role around and Marvel was ballsy enough to back me when I wanted to hire him, Gunn declared back in 2013.

'I’ll love them forever for going with me on that. No other studio in the world would have ever taken that risk,' he declared back in 2013.
