Kate Middleton wears Diana’s favourite Knot tiara for Dipolomatic Reception

The Duchess of Cambridge paid tribute to Prince William's late mother by wearing her dazzling headpiece made of 19 diamond arches each cradling a pearl drop. Diana wore the tiara often, choosing it for state banquets after the Queen gave it to her as a wedding present in 1981, including a dinner held in honour of Japanese Emperor Akihito in 1990 (right). Kate paid touching tribute to the former Princess of Wales at the glittering event for 1,500 dignitaries from 130 countries by wearing the jewellery designed by Garrard in 1914. It is the fourth time Kate, 33, has worn a tiara, choosing the Cartier Halo tiara for her 2011 wedding, the Queen Mother's Lotus Flower tiara for the Queen's annual diplomatic reception in 2013 and the same headpiece at the state banquet in October. She was joined by a dapper Prince William and Prince Charles who were both in white tie for the event which is attended by senior royals and is the largest bash held annually at the Palace.

Current Mayor of London Boris Johnson (bottom left) said Mr Trump was speaking 'utter nonsense' and openly mocked the American, adding: 'The only reason I wouldn't go to some parts of New York is the real risk of meeting Donald Trump.'

What a difference a day makes! Stunning before and after pictures show the devastation wreaked across Cumbria by Storm Desmond

Storm Desmond pictures show the devastation wreaked across Cumbria

These remarkable comparison pictures show the difference 24 hours made to the flooded streets of Cumbria and Lancashire which were hit by record rainfall brought by Storm Desmond. Over the weekend, homeowners in some of the worst hit areas including Carlisle and Cockermouth had to be evacuated from their properties as floodwater rose to waist-height. Army personnel, firefighters and mountain rescue teams could be seen carrying residents through the muddy rising waters or escorting them via boat as they helped them to safety. Floodwater lapped the doors of shops and homes, while living rooms and kitchens were left decimated by the 'unprecedented' scenes. However, today - just 24 hours after water ran like a river through the streets - the rising water had finally drained away, leaving in its wake scenes of devastation and destruction.

Thousands of homes around Lancaster, which had been plunged into darkness over the weekend, had electricity restored yesterday, only for 42,000 homes to lose power again yesterday evening. But, as forecasters warn of further heavy rain later in the week, communities and neighbours have pulled together.
