The TV movie version will air on ABC and will be a musical, but filmed ahead instead of following the live format that is becoming increasingly popular.
Abigail shared a link to an article about the casting on Twitter on Tuesday, and wrote: 'So excited to finally be able to tell you I'm playing Baby! #nobodyputsbabyinthecorner.'
It has not yet been revealed who will be taking on the role of Johnny.

Abigail found fame in indie hit Little Miss Sunshine. She was six at the time of casting, and 10 when the movie was released in July 2006.
The actress has appeared in several films and TV shows since then, but her star has risen considerably since she landed a role in Ryan Murphy's comedy/horror anthology Scream Queens.
The Fox show, which also stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Emma Roberts and sees Abigail play Chanel #5, airs its two-hour season one finale on Tuesday evening.

Abigail has also been working on her music and released her album The World Now earlier this year.
Although Dirty Dancing won't be airing live, ABC is following in the footsteps of NBC, who have had great success with their live musicals The Sound Of Music, Peter Pan and The Wiz.
And Fox has also taken a page out of NBC's book, with Grease: Live - starring Julianne Hough and Vanessa Hudgens - airing on January 31, 2016.
The Dirty Dancing TV musical has not yet set a premiere date.
