REVEALED: The top 10 most followed players on Instagram featuring Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar

Cristiano Ronaldo has added another achievement to his already impressive list by becoming the most followed footballer on Instagram. 

The Real Madrid icon pips the likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar at the top the social media list with a whopping 39.5 million followers. 

Ronaldo is a frequent user of the photo-sharing site and often posts pictures of himself and son Ronaldo Jnr enjoying some family time.

In fact, Ronaldo's most liked Instagram picture to date is a photo of the pair striking matching poses as they tensed their muscles wearing nothing but towels.

The photo, which quickly earned almost two million likes on the social media site, was captioned 'Like Dad like son'.

Barcelona star Neymar, who has scored 16 goals for the Catalan giants so far this season, is just behind Ronaldo in the followers stakes with 36.5 million fans waiting to see his behind-the-scenes pictures. 

The Brazilian's most popular post came after Barca's 3-1 Champions League final victory against Juventus. 

Neymar took a snap alongside his son David Lucca da Silva Santos as the young striker took a bite out of his Champions League winners medal.

Perhaps surprisingly, Argentine forward Lionel Messi is only the third-most followed footballer on Instagram with just over 30 million people keeping an eye on his account. 

Messi netted 10 goals in 13 Champions League appearances last season to share the tournament's golden boot with team-mate Neymar and Real Madrid rival Ronaldo and celebrated with his his son Thiago, who was seen holding the famous European trophy in a picture that attracted over two million likes. 

Elsewhere, Madrid forward James Rodriguez completes the top-four with a 16.7 million following. The 24-year-old took to Instagram recently after winning the best midfielder award at the 'La Liga' awards, held in Barcelona last month.

Gareth Bale's touching tribute to departing Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas remains the Welshman's most popular post, according to his 11.4 million followers. 

Casillas left Madrid for Porto last summer and Bale uploaded a picture of the duo alongside a heartfelt message.  

He wrote: 'Been an absolute honour playing alongside @ikercasillasoficial for the past 2 years. A true legend of the game and I wish you all the luck my friend!' 

Paris Saint-Germain stars Zlatan Ibrahimovic, David Silva and Thiago Silva all feature in the top-10 list with a combined total of 26 Instagram followers between them. 

Ibrahimovic's most popular picture was uploaded by the big Swede earlier this year as he posed with his selection of end of season trophies.
