'He is as handsome as ever!' Catherine Zeta-Jones praises father-in-law Kirk Douglas as she and husband Michael celebrate the acting legend's 99th birthday

Kirk Douglas celebrated his 99th birthday in style this week, alongside his son Michael and daughter-in-law Catherine Zeta-Jones.

The acting legend, who reached the landmark age on Wednesday December 9, was joined by his family members in his house as he was presented with a cake.

However, while the Hollywood veteran - who has over 80 movies to his credit - was given just one candle to blow out rather than the full amount, he didn't seem bothered as he posed for a picture with Michael and Catherine.

The perennially dapper star looked smart as he dressed to celebrate his big day, wearing a beige blazer with grey slacks.

Actress Catherine, 46, was casually dressed but still glamorous in a classic black dress and a cosy tweed-effect grey cardigan, matching her husband Michael's dark grey suit.

The 71-year-old Wall Street actor looked proud to be with his Oscar-winning father for his big day, holding his hand and smiling broadly as he helped him up from his chair.

Catherine shared the snap of the three of them pretending to blow the candle out on her Instagram page, along with the message: 'A wonderful evening celebrating 99 years! Kirk is as handsome and charming as ever!'

On Wednesday, Chicago actress Catherine - who has two children with husband Michael - shared a sweet congratulatory message for her father-in-law on his big day, along with a black and white photograph of the two of them together.

'Happy Birthday to my dearest Father in Law, Kirk. 99 years young today. I love you with all my heart,' she wrote.

Michael also took to his Facebook page and shared a short, yet sweet, message to his father: 'Happy 99th Birthday Dad. I love you.'

This week it was revealed that Kirk and his wife Anne have donated $15 million toward a Motion Picture Television Fund campus in Woodland Hills, California, to help build a care centre for Hollywood industry members suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

The Los Angeles Daily News reported that the centre will be named after Douglas and is expected to cost $35 million in total.

Officials announced on the day of his landmark birthday that his gift will kick the design and planning of the new facility into high gear.

The actor was born Issur Danielovitch in 1916 in Amsterdam, New York, although he changed his name to Kirk Douglas as he started his acting career.

The cleft-chin leading man went on to receive three Academy Award nominations and starred in such Hollywood classics as Spartacus and Lust for Life.
