'Hey, you guys?' Downton Abbey stars crack themselves up as they tackle a scene from the show in American accents

Downton Abbey stars have given the show a funny new twist - by adding American accents.

Actors Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville and Allen Leech showed off their hilarious US accents while appearing on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Wednesday.

The British stars put Stephen's theory that Americans only loved the show because of the 'plummy' accents to the test by reading out a scene in their best American drawl.

The cast are in the US to promote the sixth and final season of the hit ITV drama, which will premiere in America on PBS on January 3.

'One of the things that, I suspect, makes the show seem so alluring and seem in some ways like a fairy tale to us in the United States is just how plummy your accents are,' the talk show host said.

'I think that for Americans, we hear the accent and we think of it as very classy. So I'd like to try an experiment right now... can you guys try an American accent for me?'

The Downton stars looked surprised by the unusual request, but soon threw themselves into the challenge after Stephen handed out a scene from a previous episode.

'This is a scene from Downton Abbey, where you're trying to decide what to do to cover the costs... and I'd like for you to do it in American accents, not British accents, and see if it doesn't bring people down to Earth,' said Stephen.

'See if you still like us?' quipped Michelle.

The actress then threw herself into the part of Lady Mary - but this time as a spoiled 'Valley Girl.'

Hugh Bonneville, who plays patriarch Robert Crawley, then explained in a bold US accent why they should dismiss a developer's offer to build on the estate.

'I know we are only the caretakers of Downton, but Dad, some things have to change,' Michelle whined, before dissolving into giggles.
