Sam Smith unveiled four new tattoos as he shared their meaning on his Instagram on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old chose simple designs, featuring lines and phrases using only black and red ink.

The singer shared a series of close-up pictures of his new ink, starting with his first tattoo of an equal sign on his ring finger.

He wrote: 'First one - the equality sign on my wedding finger. This ones pretty self explanatory. It shows my views on gay marriage and equality for all.'

The Grammy award winner continued, sharing a photo of his right hand, which featured a similar tattoo but with two vertical lines.

He captioned the picture: 'Second - this tattoo is inspired by one of the oldest tattoos ever found on a mummified body that was found alone in the ice.'

The artist, who just wrapped his In The Lonely Hour tour on Saturday in Brisbane, Australia, showed of both of his new hand tattoos on Friday while holding a koala.

The Stay With Me singer also got two words, 'honesty' and 'alone' tattooed on his arms in cursive, which he shared in two black and white Instagram pictures.

He explained the 'honesty' tattoo: 'Third - this is what I promise to be in my music. It's what I live by. In the words of @mariamena_official "Honesty is my God."'

For his fourth and last new tat, 'alone,' he wrote: 'And lastly - this is just me being a melancholy twat haha. I do see it as a small positive thou...No longer lonely...Just alone...Which is ok x thought I'd share these with you because I love them,' adding a heart emoji.

Permanent significance: For his fourth and last new tat, 'alone,' he wrote: 'And lastly - this is just me being a melancholy twat haha. I do see it as a small positive thou...No longer lonely...Just alone...'

The British songwriter has several other small tattoos, including an anchor on his forearm for his fans, who he calls 'little sailors,' as well as the Roman number three, a matching tattoo he got with his sisters.

Sam also sports two finger tattoos of the male and female gender symbols.

The Lay Me Down singer has been on tour since January 2015, having performed in the US, Europe, South America, and Asia, before finishing off in Australia.
