'In case people think these were hickeys I've been having neck problems and its from this tool called graston to scrape the stagnant blood and scar tissue lol,' explained the 21-year-old.

Bieber was referring to the Graston Technique, a procedure in which microtrauma is induced beneath the skin using metal implements in order to stimulate the body's natural repair process.

While the technique has been used on athletes playing contact sports, it has not been scientifically show to be effective.

Speaking to Men's Health  magazine for their April cover this year, Justin revealed that he had injured his neck on a trampoline.

It happened 'about a year ago,' he told the magazine.

'I landed on a trampoline on my neck, doing a backflip, and my neck has been messed up ever since,' said the Baby singer.

Bieber has previously spoken of visiting a chiropractor to treat the injury.

His neck has certainly been suffering lately - it is also sporting a large new tattoo of angel's wings, which the star had inked on a recent trip to Miami.

According to TMZ, Bieber decided to add to his extensive collection of body art in the early hours of the morning last week, while staying at the Versace mansion.

The request sent his entourage into overdrive as they tried to source someone who was prepared to put needle to skin at such short notice.

The lucky tattoo artist who answered their phone in the small hours was Dan Price.

He was able to come down to the Versace mansion and get creative.

The new design is Justin's 52nd piece of body art.
