Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe praises Harry Arter in Manchester United win after death of newborn baby just two days before

Eddie Howe has paid a moving tribute to Harry Arter after the midfielder played a starring role in Bournemouth's shock win over Manchester United just two days on from the death of his child.

The club confirmed shortly before kick-off that the 25-year-old and his partner had tragically lost their baby at birth on Thursday.

Bournemouth's players took to the field wearing black armbands in respect for the family, before stunning United in a 2-1 win.

Howe said: 'Harry wanted to play. I had to make a decision but there was no doubt after I spoke to him that I was going to pick him.

'It's been a really tough week for Harry and his famly – life has a way of throwing things at people.

'To play the way he did with the emotions running through his body, I can't praise him enough.

'He showed real strength, and I have to say his team mates rallied round him too. I am really proud. The pain won't go away but our thoughts are with him and his family.'

The win followed Bournemouth's equally surprising victory at Chelsea last weekend.

Howe, whose side have overcome a series of major injuries to key players, added: 'It has been a great week. We are embracing that feeling at the moment.

'I saw in the week that we had that spring in the step. That was evident to us as coaches.

'We try not to talk about the injuries, we try to focus on the players we have, and we still believe we are strong enough. Hopefully the past two games are further proof that we can compete.'
