After being taken for a mammogram by a friend, she says she found out she had cancer a day later, before having a lumpectomy and chemotherapy for four months, which meant she lost all her hair.

She was clear of the disease but after 18 months, it returned.

'I met with three surgeons, then with a plastic surgeon and they said, "This is going to be intense as we’re talking about taking out some ribs to get this cleared up". I said, "Ribs? How many?" and they said, "At least two or three". Well, they ended up taking out seven.

'Then they took a bit of my chest wall and did a complete mastectomy. They had to re-build me. The plastic surgeon took muscle from my back and stretched it all the way to the front. Really major surgery. But after it all my doctor said, "You’re cancer-free".

MailOnline has contacted a spokesperson for Lorna Luft for comment.

Lorna, whose godfather was Frank Sinatra, is the half-sister of Liza Minnelli, 70, and she is too back to fighting fit.

Medication for a sprained back combined with a renewed spell of drinking resulted in her spending several weeks in rehab in March and April. But it seems to have paid off.

She told the Daily Mail: 'Performers like to perform. It’s what I do.’

‘Listen, everyone ages but not everyone has to get old. I’ve never lost my curiosity and I think that keeps you young.’ She also does a dance class every day, not bad for someone who’s had two hip and one knee replacement operations.

‘On the top half I’m Dorothy [the part her mother played in The Wizard Of Oz]. On the bottom half I’m the Tin Man. When I walk through that metal detector at the airport, it’s like fireworks going off.’
