Prisoners would get intimate with staff in the meat freezer at the jail where two convicted murderers escaped, a former inmate of the facility has claimed.

Club Kid killer Michael Alig, who served 17 years in the Clinton Correctional Facility for the murder of drug dealer Angel Melendez, has said it was easy for prisoners to have sex with women.

It comes as the hunt continues for Richard Matt and David Sweat, who broke free from the jail 12 days ago in a plot mirroring that of the film, The Shawshank Redemption.

It has also been claimed that prisoner worker Joyce Mitchell had sex with both Matt, 48, and 35-year-old Sweat while they were serving time.

She has also been charged with helping the killers flee by providing them with a hacksaw, blades, chisel and other tools.

Now Alig has told the New York Post's Page Six that prison workers could easily have sex with inmates at the jail as they had access to private rooms.

He told the newspaper: 'They have access to like the storage rooms or the meat freezer. A lot of things can happen in the meat freezer. Because there's only one entrance, it can be locked and there are no windows. Those places are known to everyone.

'There are also blind spots. Officers are placed like every 100 feet. But there are these tiny little spots where the guards can't see you - inmates know where all those spots are.'

Alig's remarks come days after it was revealed that Mitchell was investigated for having a sexual relationship with Sweat, and that she may have wanted the two men to kill her husband.

Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie would neither confirm or deny that Mitchell had slept with either of the men.

Meanwhile state police plan to expand the search for two escaped murderers beyond a 16-square-mile area of woods, fields and swamps where the manhunt has been most intense, even as rainy weather hampers their progress.

Clinton County Sheriff David Favro said that rain has been washing away any scent dogs might find and interfering with thermal imaging devices being used to detect body heat.

No vehicles were reported stolen in the area, which led searchers to believe convicts David Sweat and Richard Matt were still near the prison.

The more than 800 law enforcement officers combing the rural area now have shifted their focus eastward along Route 374 leading from the village of Dannemora, home of the Clinton Correctional Facility, in far northern New York.

Matt and Sweat escaped on June 6 from the maximum-security prison near the Canadian border.

Sweat, 35, was serving a life sentence without parole in the killing of a sheriff's deputy. Matt, 48, was doing 25 years to life for the kidnap, torture and hacksaw dismemberment of his former boss.

Authorities say the convicts used power tools to cut through the backs of their adjacent cells, broke through a brick wall and then cut into a steam pipe and slithered through it, finally emerging outside the prison walls through a manhole.
